Isolation, characterization, and pathogenicity studies of a bovine respiratory syncytial virus.

The isolation and characterization of a bovine respiratory syncytial (RS) virus is described. Serological studies indicate that bovine RS virus is widespread in Iowa cattle and that it is involved in some outbreaks of respiratory disease. Experimental infection in calves indicates that the virus can cause illness in calves, particularly those with serum neutralizing antibody.

A bovine adenovirus type 3: isolation, characterization, and experimental infection in calves.

A virus was isolated from a group of feedlot cattle with acute respiratory disease that was characterized by physicochemical methods as an adenovirus and identified serologically as a bovine adenovirus type 3. Intratracheal inoculation of three 4 month old colostrum deprived calves resulted in pyrexia, hyperpnea, dyspnea, anorexia and in one animal a mild diarrhea.

Tuberculous meningitis in children during the isoniazid era.

Fifty-nine cases of tuberculous meningitis in children seen at the Charity Hospital at New Orleans since the addition of isoniazid to the therapy in 1952 are reviewed. Fourteen of the children died during hopsitalization. At discharge 21 children had complete or nearly complete clinical recovery. Follow-up of 21 available long-term survivors revealed a significant number with neurologic and social disabilities. The endemicity of tuberculous infections in the households of the children and factors responsible for transmission of tubercle bacilli from an adult source are reported. The importance of chemoprophylaxis and public health measures in eliminating this disease are stressed.

Seroepidemiologic study of Epstein-Barr virus infections in a rural community.

The prevalence and titers of antibodies to capsid antigens of Epstein-Barr virus ad to the diffuse and restricted components of the Epstein-Barr virus-induced early antigen complex were determined in 109 families of a semirural community in Louisiana. Titers of antibody to the capsid antigens larger than or equal to 10 were found in 84 percent of children aged two to five years, and the prevalence increased with age to nearly 100 percent. There was a positive but variable correlation of the prevalence of anti-capsid antigen reactivity with low socioeconomic status and crowding. An overrepresentation of high titers of antibody to capsid antigens was present in individuals with a past history of pneumonia and urinary tract infections. The geometric mean titers of antibody to capsid antigens were highest in early childhood, lowest in adolescence and young adulthood, and high in the elderly. Females in all age groups and tonsillectomized children showed a higher geometric mean titer than their male and nontonsillectomized counterparts, respectively. Antibodies to the early antigen complex were found rarely (8.2 percent) and only in sera with relatively high titers of antibody to capsid antigens.

Observations relating to the efficiency of mixing in rapid reaction flow devices.

The principle of dimensional analysis of liquid flow has been applied to the problem of rapid mixing in flow apparatus. A model of the Hartridge-Roughton mixing chamber and observation tube has been scaled approximately 1/1.000 so that the times after mixing are approximately 6 s, the flow velocities are the order of 2 cm/s, and the distance from mixing to observation is 120 mm. Visual observation is employed to observe the end point of the mixing of acid-base with a color indicator, thymol blue. Quantitative estimates of the effect of the number of jets, the effect of screens placed in the flow stream, and the angle of jets, one with respect to another, lead to quantitative evaluations of these parameters for the scale model. The extent to which these parameters apply to the full-scale apparatus at faster flow velocities suggest that the general principles employed in the scale model are valid, although more emphasis is placed upon turbulence generation at the low flow velocities employed in this experiment than at the faster flow velocities employed in the full-scale apparatus.
