[Methylphenidate double-blind trial: indication and performing].

Hyperkinetic disorders or attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorders (ADHD) are among the psychiatric diagnoses most often encountered in children and adolescents. Symptoms include inattention, hyperactivity and impulsivity. Within the multi-modal treatment system, the therapy with psychostimulants (e. g. methylphenidate) proved to be an effective in patients with ADHD. A double-blind trial is indicated in cases of unclear efficacy of methylphenidate at initial application or if psychostimulants have regularly been applied for more than one year with an leave-out trial delivering unequivocal results. Further it is helpful in verifying potential undesirable side effects and improving patients' compliance.

[Biomarkers and uterine cervical cancer. Are they useful for prognosis of cancer and triage of precancerous lesions?].

Biomarkers are "keys" of oncogenesis. Many applications are soon possible as gene therapy and vaccination. Authors have reviewed different aspects of classical prognosis factors and examined new possibilities of prognosis and selection of precancerous lesions as ASCUS by biomarkers. Ag SCCTA4, HPV typing, microangiogenesis, are the main biomarkers in cervical cancers.

[Important child psychiatric areas of research--retrospect and prospects].

Objectively and subjectively limiting factors have to be kept in mind when considering research topics which have been given up and those which are actually followed. Five examples for research topics which have been dropped are given, all those topics survived in some way. They are discussed under the headings: knowledge about diagnoses, course of disorder, intervention, pathogenesis and development. Referring to the same headings, another five recent research approaches are presented, which may be subsumed under ecological child psychiatry. Their complexity requires a model-guided prospective multi-level research approach, which allows to join the biological and psychosocial research line, and which allows to sufficiently consider the sequence of pathogenetic events, the influence of developmental aspects, and the effects of interventions. This kind of research, however, requires a reorganisation of research structures and funding.

[Violence in families and its prevention. Also a plea for abolishing the parental right to inflict physical punishment. A report of the "Violence Commission" of the federal government].

Violence in families is rather frequent. Different forms of violent acts can be distinguished: violence between partners, violence between parents and children, violence among siblings, and violence against elder family members. This report gives an overview--with the emphasis on violence in families--of the work of the "Violence Commission" of the Federal Government. This commission worked out proposals for intervention in the case of intrafamiliar violence as well as for prevention. Two proposals of the commission are explained in detail: (1) Rejection of violence and prohibition of corporal punishment in education and (2) punishability of conjugal violation.
