Computed tomography of Sturge-Weber syndrome in infants.

Computed tomographic findings in two infants with Sturge-Weber syndrome include calcification of the brain not visible on plain radiographs. In both cases, the choroid plexus was very prominent, and, in one, a hemangioma of the choroid plexus was found at surgery. In the other, especially dense deposits of mineral were identified at surgery to be calcified branches of the middle cerebral artery.

Computed tomographic evaluation of subdural and epidural metastases.

Head computed tomography scans of eight patients with calvarial metastases revealed extension of the tumors into the epidural and subdural spaces; Epidural and subdural extensions enhanced after contrast medium administration and were either crescentic or biconcave. In six patients, these tumors produced sufficient mass effect to displace intraparenchymal structures. The subdural and epidural tumor extensions appeared similar to subdural and epidural hematomas, but could be diagnosed correctly because the former enhanced uniformly and were associated with destructive calvarial changes.

Value of computerized tomography scanning in syndromes associated with mental retardation: preliminary report.

The application of CT scanning in the evaluation of mental retardation syndromes is reviewed. In a representative sample of 35 institutionalized patients, the CT scan showed gross anatomic abnormality in most. However, these findings were diagnostic in only a small minority. Implications of this are discussed. In addition, the potential role of CT in the diagnosis of intercurrent diseases in the mentally retarded is considered.

CT demonstration of a dural arteriovenous malformation.

A case of dural arteriovenous malformation with intracranial and subdural hemorrhage is presented. The computed tomographic scan with contrast injection demonstrated nodular enhancement adjacent to intracerebral hemorrhage, suggesting an underlying vascular malformation. Angiography confirmed this suggested diagnosis. A brief review of dural AVM is included.

Rhinocerebral mucormycosis with CT scan findings: a case report.

A case of rhinocerebral mucormycosis in a diabetic patient is presented. The radiologic findings of the disease with differential diagnosis are reviewed. Almost complete cure with surgical excision and Amphotericin B was accomplished.

Radiology of anterior cerebral artery infarction.

Twenty patients with anterior cerebral artery infarction are reviewed. Usual and unusual clinical presentation and radiographic findings (angiography and computed tomography) are correlated.

Cranial subdural hematoma following lumbar myelography.

A case of cranial subdural hematoma after lumbar myelography is reported. The literature of this unusual complication of lumbar myelography is reviewed and the possible mechanism is discussed briefly.

Importance of metrizamide CT for evaluation of the thoracic spine.

Post-metrizamide myelographic CT of the area of interest is indicated in cases in which myelography is normal, and also in cases in which myelographic findings alone cannot explain the patient's symptoms. Obtaining early and 4-6 hour delayed CT is of great importance for the detection of syringomyelia and cystic lesions of the cord. In cases of congenital anomalies, additional information can be obtained by this method. This paper presents our experiences at Loyola University Hospital.

Radiologic evaluation of tuberculous meningitis.

Five cases of primary tuberculous meningitis are presented. In three cases of acute meningeal process, the classic computed tomographic (CT) scan findings of basal meningeal enhancement, hydrocephalus and arteritis on angiography were found. These radiologic findings suggested the diagnosis, and antituberculosis treatment was therefore instituted at an early stage of the disease. In the remaining two cases with late complication of tuberculous meningitis, hydrocephalus and basal vessel arteritis were present. The importance of correlation of the clinical and radiographic findings is discussed.

Toxemia of pregnancy: cerebral CT findings.

Four patients with pregnancy-induced hypertension (preeclampsia-eclampsia) and neurological dysfunction unrelated to intracranial hemorrhage, cerebral venous thrombosis, or preexisting neurological disorder had cranial CT performed during their hospitalization. Three patients had diffuse white matter hypodensities with associated mass effect. The fourth patient had bilateral, asymmetric hypodensities confined to the basal ganglia. Computed tomography is useful in establishing an early diagnosis of the complicating neurological disorder as well as in providing a better understanding of the physiopathological changes seen in the brain in this condition.

Use of the delayed mask for improved demonstration of aneurysms on intraarterial DSA.

PURPOSE: We retrospectively explored the use of the delayed mask technique for intraarterial digital subtraction angiography (IADSA) to demonstrate the anatomy of aneurysm necks. METHODS: The delayed mask technique was utilized in 22 patients who had craniotomies for aneurysms demonstrated at angiography. The operative notes were compared to the angiographic findings of both the traditionally masked IADSA and the delayed mask IADSA. In addition, an in vitro model was constructed to examine the relationship between the size of the aneurysm neck and the ability to indirectly define its anatomy by demonstrating the flow jet. RESULTS: In 12 of 22 cases, the delayed mask technique demonstrated a systolic jet that was not demonstrated by traditional subtraction techniques. In nine of 12 cases, the delayed mask technique gave more specific information regarding the size, location, and orientation of the aneurysm neck. CONCLUSION: The delayed mask technique can add important information regarding the anatomy of aneurysm without adding time or risk to the procedure.
