[Effects of organic acids on corrosion of orthodontic appliances].

BACKGROUND: During the last years orthodontic practitioners and patients have developed an increasing interest on the possible undesired effects originated by the growing use of treatments in this field. Among the several undesirable effects, we have analyzed those due to allergic phenomena or cases of direct toxicity resulting from the emission of metallic ions contained in the metallic parts of the orthodontic equipment. One of the essential requirements of metals for orthodontic use is biocompatibility; international regulations (CE, ISO) value the biocompatibility of materials for orthodontics. The analysis of biocompatibility in orthodontic equipment cannot leave out of consideration the evaluation of ion emission. METHODS: In our research we have considered the release of metallic ions from orthodontic equipment in water solutions of organic acids kept at a constant temperature of 37 degrees C for 28 days. The evaluation has been possible by ionic absorption spectrophotometry. RESULTS: The results show that the release of metallic ions, low as an absolute value, has a particular trend in time. The nickel, chromium and copper concentrations have been higher during the first day than in the following 27 days. CONCLUSIONS: These data reassure about the use of orthodontic equipment, since the emission of ions is low, even if allergic problems not linked to the quantity of ions emitted cannot be excluded.

[Clinical considerations on 2 cases of hepatic fascioliasis. Importance of the imaging examinations].

Two cases of hepatic human fascioliasis, both with antecedents of eating watercress, hepatobiliary symptoms and high eosinophilia are described. In the first one (42 year-old male), at the beginning the abdominal ecotomographical and computed tomography images suggested an hepatic tumor, but afterwards, the finding of Fasciola hepatica ova in feces and the observation of numerous typical images of the fluke in the choledochus by means of an endoscopic cholangiography, plus lesions related to a Löffler syndrome detected in a chest radiography, lead to the diagnosis of hepatic fascioliasis. The patient was treated with dehydroemetine. In the second case (52 year-old male), presented pain in the upper right abdominal quadrant; in an abdominal ecography three cystic lesions in the right liver lobe were found. Nor in the feces neither in the bile F. hepatica eggs were observed. Serological tests for fascioliasis and hydatidosis resulted positive. The endoscopic cholangiography was normal. With the presumptive diagnosis of fascioliasis the patient was treated with dehydroemetine. But as his disturbances remained during the following six months, and raising the possibility of a suppurated hydatid cyst or hepatic abscesses, he was submitted to surgery, finding F. hepatica eggs in the chocolate-like hematic liquid. In the wall and in a liver mass resected a grunuloma with eggs of the parasite was detected. The patient was treated again and cured with dehydroemetine. The existence of subcapsular hematomata and granulomas in hepatic fascioliasis, which can give raise to a diagnosis confusion due to their aspect in the ecotomography and computed tomography are commented. The cholangiographic aspect of the affection is discussed.

Basal cell carcinoma of the nose requiring amputation arising after irradiation for childhood hemangioma.

A 49-year-old female, who had undergone irradiation at six years of age as a treatment for a cutaneous nasal hemangioma, developed later a devastating basal cell carcinoma requiring sub-amputation of the nose and subsequent reconstruction with a pre-expanded forehead flap. Basal cell carcinomas are now frequently reported as late sequelae of previous low-dose irradiations after 10-20 years, and patients should be aware of this possible evolution.

[The effect of orthodontic magnets on the oral microbial flora].

In this study we wanted to test the in vitro effects of orthodontic magnetic brackets, developing different magnetic fields, on the oral microbial flora. We noticed that a magnetic field has its most considerable influence on Candida albicans growth; the stimulating response depends on various factors: cell inoculum, exposure time and magnetic field frequency.

[Comparative study of orthodontic cements for direct bonding technique].

In this work the Authors evaluate the resistance to the traction of three different materials used in the "Direct Bonding" technique. The obtained results suggest the combined use of such cements giving importance to the anticariogenic properties of glass ionomer cements due to the long-term F release.

[Hepatic hydatid cyst. Ultrasonography study].

Fifty four patients with hepatic hydatidosis were studied by means of ecotomography. All were operated on. The sensitivity of ecotomography was 83%. Six different types of images were characterized in this study: calcificated cyst, cyst with collapsed membranes, multiloculated cyst, univesicular, pseudotumoral and cyst with absorption of the sound. The three first types of images of the cyst can suggest the diagnosis, but the others produce diagnosis problems.

[Experience with anti-hepatitis-B vaccination using a recombinant DNA vaccine, in students of dentistry at the University of Perugia].

Infection with HBV is still one of the more important professional risk for medical staff. This is particularly true for dentists the more so when they are operating in areas at medium or high prevalence of HBsAg carriers. In such situation patients often ignore their carrier state, when they know it they are not always conscious of the importance of notifying the information to their dentist. The dentists, on the other hand, don't routinely collect a detailed anamnesis of their patients. For these reasons the opportunity of being vaccinated against hepatitis B with a DNA recombinant vaccine was offered to dentistry students of the University of Perugia. All participants were to be negative for hepatitis B markers of infection including HBsAg and anti HBs. All volunteers were to have normal aminotransferase levels, be in good physical condition and give their informed written consent. 48 students turned out to be eligible for vaccination, of them 35 were males, 13 females, mean age 23 years. About two months after the third dose, all the vaccinees had seroconverted and 70.4% of them showed antibody titres between 1,000 greater than or equal to 10,000 UI/l. That indicate that very likely the antibody persistence will be long lasting (at least 5 years). Side effects, light and of short duration, were rarely seen.
