Is nifedipine phototoxic?

Circumstantial evidence of phototoxicity of nifedipine is poor, being based only on uncontrolled clinical evidence. The authors have assessed nifedipine phototoxicity in vitro by photohemolysis and Candida albicans tests and found it measurable at 10 and 100 micrograms/ml. These dosages exceed the 0.1 microgram/ml blood levels that are usually attained in vivo.

Racial differences in experimental skin infection with Candida albicans.

The forearm skin of 10 Caucasians and 10 American Negroes was inoculated with Candida albicans and the severity of the ensuing dermatitis as well as the population of Candida and other aerobes in the inoculum site have been assessed. Negroid skin proved to be less susceptible to irritation, even though it harboured a higher population of yeasts and aerobes other than Candida.

Lichenoid photocontact dermatitis to musk ambrette.

A patient is described with a pigmentary dermatitis of the face with histological features of a lichenoid reaction, which proved to be a photocontact dermatitis to musk ambrette. Photopatch tests produced a pigmented dermatitis that reflected the clinical and histological features of a lichenoid reaction, which occurred 1 month after application.

Acquired progressive kinking of the hair.

A case of acquired progressive kinking of the hair is described. Scanning electron microscopy disclosed many hair malformations, including pili canaliculi and twisted and beaded hairs.

The case of the felted wig.

A sudden matting of hair after shampooing of a hairpiece is reported, which led the patient to a lawsuit. Chemical analyses showed that hairs were weathered and led to a possible explanation of the curious phenomenon.

Flushing in rosacea: a possible mechanism.

Flushing in rosacea has been investigated by means of (a) pharmacological inhibition of some possible chemical mediators and (b) titration of bradykinin as a possible effector directly in the blood. Clonidine-inhibited flushing was seen in all patients (mean 45%), other drugs had poorer results. Bradykinin increased in all patients at the climax of flushing (mean 60%). These findings support the hypothesis that epinephrine promotes a bradykinin release responsible for vasodilation.

Flushing in rosacea: an experimental approach.

A simple method is described which causes rosacea patients to flush. This flush is experienced similarly to the flush which occurs spontaneously and its intensity can be measured and monitored quantitatively. Therefore, it can be used as a suitable experimental tool to measure and compare the inhibitory effects of some drugs, as well as the fluctuations of the blood level of certain chemical vasoactive mediators.

Studies on rat hair cultures. IV. The effects of testosterone and dihydrotestosterone.

By means of two different quantification techniques the Authors were able to show that the addition of increasing concentrations of testosterone to the medium of hair-cultures simultaneously provokes an increased volume of epidermis as well as of hair-follicles and a better differentiation of hair follicles. The addition of dihydrotestosterone, on the contrary, does not induce any change.
