Epidermal growth factor stimulates phosphatidylinositol turnover for ten hours in A431 cells without activation of protein kinase C.

Epidermal Growth Factor stimulated phosphatidylinositol turnover in A431 cells for up to ten hours. There was an increase in phosphatidylinositol, phosphatidylinositol-4-phosphate, phosphatidylinositol-4,5-bisphosphate and phosphatidic acid at all time points. The effects on the inositol phosphates were variable. Despite the activation of the phosphatidylinositol cycle, we were unable to demonstrate activation of protein kinase C.

Risk preference and decision making in critical care situations.

Physician attitudes towards risk may influence their behavior in critical care situations. To explore this hypothesis, physicians' responses to a questionnaire about risk were compared to their preferences towards "intubation" or "current therapy without intubation" for a hypothetical patient with end-stage lung disease, and to the length of time they performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation before they declared their efforts unsuccessful. When the choices on the questionnaire were framed in terms of loss, choice of the risky alternative was associated with greater preference for "intubation," and with longer duration of resuscitation efforts (both p less than .005). At least part of the variation in physician attitudes and practices towards the care of the critically or terminally ill is associated with measurable psychologic differences among individual physicians.

Insulin-like growth factor-I modulates endothelial cell chemotaxis.

Insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I) significantly promoted chemotaxis in three separate endothelial cell lines at concentrations ranging from 4 to 150 ng/ml. When added to minimum essential medium (MEM) supplemented with 1% fetal calf serum, IGF-I augmented chemotaxis to a level equalling the maximal chemotactic effect obtainable with MEM supplemented with 10% fetal calf serum (FCS 10%). The data are compatible with a potential role for IGF-I in neovascularization.
