Mechanism of plant growth promotion by rhizobacteria.

Plant growth results from interaction of roots and shoots with the environment. The environment for roots is the soil or planting medium which provide structural support as well as water and nutrients to the plant. Roots also support the growth and functions of a complex of microorganisms that can have a profound effect on the growth anti survival of plants. These microorganisms constitute rhizosphere microflora and can be categorized as deleterious, beneficial, or neutral with respect to root/plant health. Beneficial interactions between roots and microbes do occur in rhizosphere and can be enhanced. Increased plant growth and crop yield can be obtained upon inoculating seeds or roots with certain specific root-colonizing bacteria- 'plant growth promoting rhizobacteria'. In this review, we discuss the mechanisms by which plant growth promoting rhizobacteria may stimulate plant growth.

Pithedulosides A-G, oleanane glycosides from Pithecellobium dulce.

Seven saponins named pithedulosides A-G were isolated from the seeds of Pithecellobium dulce. Their structures were established through spectral analyses as echinocystic acid 3-O-alpha-L-arabinopyranosyl-(1-->6)-beta-D-glucopyranoside, echinocystic acid and oleanolic acid 3-O-alpha-L-arabinopyranosyl- (1-->2)-alpha-L-arabinopyranosyl-(1-->6)-beta-D-glucopyranosides and 3-O-beta-D-xylopyranosyl-(1-->2)-alpha-L-arabinopyranosyl -(1-->6)-beta-D-glucopyranosides, oleanolic acid 3-O-alpha-L-arabinopyranosy-(1-->2)-alpha-L- arabinopyranosyl-(1-->6)-[beta-D-glucopyranosyl-(1-->2)]-beta- D-glucopyranoside, and 3-O-beta-D-xylopyranosyl-(1-->2)-alpha-L-arabinopyranosyl-(1-->6) -[beta-D-glucopyranosyl-(1-->2)]--beta-D-glucopyranoside.

Comparative evaluation of fine needle aspiration cytology and biopsy of testis in diagnosis of male infertility.

Infertility has a fair degree of male factor contribution in its aetiology, hence needs complete evaluation of male partner especially the status of spermatogenesis. In the present study comparative evaluation of fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) and biopsy of testis showed 90% accuracy of FNAC in respect of histopathological diagnosis of spermatogenesis. FNAC is a safe, fairly accurate, outdoor investigation in infertile man and it is devoid of the complications of haematoma formation, suppression of spermatogenesis and antigenic stimulation as seen with testicular biopsy.

Chromatographic techniques in the analysis of organochlorine pesticide residues.

The review briefly covers the chromatographic techniques used in the analysis of organochlorine pesticide residues. The organochlorines ranging from DDT, HCH, the cyclodiene group and the polychloroterpene group have been covered. It endeavours to examine the existing methodologies and techniques including residue extraction, clean-up, chromatographic procedures involved in clean-up and determination and quantification of organochlorine residues by gas liquid chromatography from different substrates like food commodities, crops, soil and water.

Combined chemotherapy in the medical management of tubal pregnancy.

The medical management of early unruptured tubal ectopic pregnancies is gaining acceptance internationally as an alternative to surgical procedures. This method has been shown to be effective and safe in properly selected cases and with adequate supervision. Most of the work however has been done using either methotrexate or prostaglandins. The present study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of a combined therapeutic regimen. The efficacy was noted to be at least as good but with fewer side-effects. The treatment was effective in 18 out of 19 cases of tubal pregnancies (94.7%). One patient complained of a gastritis which resolved with antacids. One patient experienced abdominal cramps and transient hypotension probably as a profound vagal response during tubal abortion. The median time to resolution varied directly with the initial serum beta HCG level at diagnosis. All patients who responded to the therapy described the experience as painless and viewed the treatment positively as it spared them the need for surgery and its attendant anaesthetic risks. However, we strongly recommend caution and close supervision and to keep the patient in the hospital at least for the first week of therapy.

Sigmoido-rectal intussusception.

Sigmoido-rectal intussusception is the least common type of intussusception seen in infants and children and is therefore usually misdiagnosed as rectal prolapse. Delay in diagnosis and treatment is due to lack of its awareness amongst surgeons, incomplete assessment of the prolapsed bowel at the anal orifice, and absence of classical traid of intussusception i.e. palpable abdominal mass, colicky abdominal pain, and bleeding per rectum.

Independent regulation of atrial coronary blood flow by atrial contraction rate in conscious dogs.

The effects of separate increases in atrial and ventricular contraction rates on the distribution of coronary flow within the heart were determined in conscious dogs with chronic heart block. Atrial tachycardia increased atrial blood flow and did not change ventricular blood flow. Ventricular tachycardia increased ventricular blood flow but not atrial blood flow. The results are consistent with the concept of local regulation of coronary perfusion by local myocardial energy turnover. The results also call attention to a potential adverse impact of atrial tachyarrhythmia in patients with underlying coronary ischemia.

Left axis deviation as a single screening criterion in acquired nonvalvulvar heart disease. Association with abnormal systolic time intervals in hypertensive subjects.

The value of left axis deviation (LAD) as a single discriminator of clinical cardiac abnormality and its association with reduced left ventricular function was investigated in 100 consecutive ambulatory subjects with LAD, and 100 age and sex-matched subjects without LAD from the patient population of a voluntary screening clinic. Analysis of clinical data and measurement of QRS frontal plane axis as well as systolic time intervals (STI) were each done separately by different investigators in a blind manner. The only large groups in the study population were those with coronary heart disease and those with hypertension. The high prevalence of definite and probable coronary artery disease among subjects with LAD (32/100) contrasted with its paucity in the control group (8/100). Hypertensive and borderline hypertensive subjects occurred in sufficient numbers.

Heavy metal removal by biosorption using Phanerochaete chrysosporium.

Biosorption using microbial cells as adsorbents is being seen as a cost-effective method for the removal of heavy metals from wastewaters. Biosorption studies with Phanerochaete chrysosporium were performed for copper (II), lead (II), and cadmium (II) to evaluate the effectiveness and to optimize the operational parameters using response surface methodology. The operational parameters chosen were initial metal ion concentration, pH, and biosorbent dosage. Using this method, the metal removal could be correlated to the operational parameters, and their values were optimized. The results showed fairly high adsorptive capacities for all the metals within the settings of the operational parameters. The removal efficiencies followed the order Pb > Cu > Cd. As a general trend, metal removal efficiency decreased as the initial metal ion concentration increased, and the results fitted the Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms well.
