Increased survival due to radioactive estradiol in mice with C3HBA or BW 10232 tumors.

The influence of progesterone and estradiol labeled with tritium was studied in mice inoculated with transplantable mammary adenocarcinomas C3HBA or BW 10232. Tumor size, tumor growth rate, and host survival were measured. Radioactive [3H]estradiol administration increased survival time and inhibited tumor growth in mice inoculated with these tumor lines. Tumor growth retardation depended on the amount of radioactivity injected and nonradioactive estradiol was without any salutary effect on tumor size or host survival. Neither survival times nor tumor growth rate were altered by radioactive [3H]progesterone. The underlying mechanism(s) is (are) referable to ionizing radiation by the specific carrier estradiol or to an isotope effect of [3H]estradiol.

Enhancement of individual and community competence: the older adult as community worker.

This paper presents an evaluation of a primary prevention program designed to enhance individual and community competence in older adult community workers and in community residents with whom they worked. A total of 22 community workers and 97 community residents participated in the study; 30 residents constituted as posttest-only control group. Pre-post changes included increased knowledge of community services among all participants, as well as increased number of community information channels and increased life satisfaction for the workers. Residents, particularly black residents, became more internal, and their increased sense of personal control was related to their increased knowledge of services. Thus, the helper-therapy principle was supported for these older adult, mostly female, community workers, and their helping role had a net empowering effect.

The relationship between long-distance running, plasma progesterone, and luteal phase length.

The chronic effects of long-distance running upon the menstrual cycle were studied in a healthy, ovulatory 30-year-old woman. Luteal phase plasma concentrations of follicle-stimulating hormone, luteinizing hormone, 17beta-estradiol, and progesterone were compared during a control and a training cycle. The luteal phase was shorter in cycles of greater mileage. Mid-luteal phase plasma progesterone concentrations were significantly lower during training.

Cortisol levels in amniotic fluid in prostaglandin F2alpha-induced midtrimester abortion.

Cortisol concentrations in amniotic fluid and maternal plasma were determined by a competitive protein-binding assay in 14 patients in the midtrimester of pregnancy before and after intra-amniotic administration of prostaglandin F2alpha. Samples were obtained at three-hour intervals until abortion or until the fetal heartbeat ceased. The mean plasma levels of cortisol increased from 324 +/- 173 ng. per milliliter at hour 0 to 524 +/- 272 ng. per milliliter at 6 hours (the peak elevated value). In amniotic fluid, the mean levels of cortisol increased from 4.71 +/- 2.5 ng. per milliliter to a maximum at 9 hours of 10.24 +/- 2.5 ng. per milliliter. We concluded that at 16 to 20 weeks' gestation the fetoplacental unit is capable of responding to prostaglandin F2alpha instillation by increased levels of cortisol in the amniotic fluid.

Progesterone levels in amniotic fluid and maternal plasma in prostaglandin F2alpha-induced midtrimester abortion.

Progesterone concentrations in amniotic fluid and maternal plasma were determined in 11 midtrimester pregnant patients following the intraamniotic administration of prostaglandin F2alpha. Samples were obtained at 3-hour intervals until abortion or spontaneous rupture of membranes occurred or fetal heart tones disappeared. In amniotic fluid, the mean progesterone concentrations increased throughout the sampling period. The plasma progesterone levels declined by about one-third of basal values in the first 3 hours after prostaglandin administration. The paradoxic increase in amniotic fluid progesterone is probably secondary to alterations in uterine blood flow and intrauterine pressure.

Neuroimaging findings in twins discordant for Alzheimer's disease.

Data from computed tomography (CT) scans of 12 twin pairs in which one partner had Azheimer's disease (AD) and the other partner is cognitively intact were analyzed to study structural brain features associated with AD while controlling for familial factors. Visual ratings and analysis of quantified areas and volumes indicated that AD twins showed more dilation of temporal horns, lateral ventricles and third ventricle, and more atrophy of temporal lobes, particularly in the anterior temporal/perisylvian area, than their healthy cotwins. Demented twins did not have smaller intracranial areas or overall brain volumes than their intact partners. The apolipoprotein sigma-4 allele was associated with greater dilation of lateral ventricles and ventricular volume. Significant intrapair correlations were found for total intracranial area and volume, cerebellar area and white matter lesions.

Individual and community: normative conflicts in the development of a new therapeutic community for older persons.

This paper examines the role of ideology in the establishment of a new therapeutic community for geriatric patients in a state mental hospital. Contradictory role expectations, reflected both in staff-staff and in staff-patient relationship, interfered with the program's achieving its stated goals. In order to apply a humanistic approach to programs for elderly patients, realistic goals-encompassing the range of patient competence-must be set within a reasonable time framework, and the program must provide for an appropriate range of structure.
