Muscle activation patterns of the quadriceps and hamstrings were studied in normal human subjects walking at comfortable speed on a treadmill. In addition knee angular velocity patterns and swing and stance phases of the step cycle were recorded. Data were collected from normal paces and from paces in which a momentary unexpected resistance was applied to the leg during swing. The application of the resistance caused an advance in the onset of both quadriceps and hamstrings activity. The latency of the onset of activity following the resistance in the quadriceps was 78.2 +/- 26.4 ms and this was considered to indicate a long latency stretch reflex. There was a close association between the onset of quadriceps and hamstrings activity both in the normal and resistance paces. The changes observed in knee angular velocity upon application of the resistance indicate tight control of angular velocity patterns. The results have important implications regarding neural control of muscle during purposive movement and the regulation of sensitivity of muscle receptors during such movements, especially during the periods when the muscle is normally inactive.

The higher incidence of blue-yellow color blindness (tritanopia) found among alcoholics could be due to genetic or acquired factors. The acute administration of ethanol to alcoholics and normal subjects transiently resulted in poorer color discrimination in all spectra but with significantly more errors in the blue-yellow versus the red-green color range (p < 0.005, p < 0.01). Thus, ethanol appears to act as a toxin to inner retinal layers, which could account for the higher incidence of tritanopia found among alcoholics.
This report evaluates the effect of prior administration of several clinically used Sn(II)-containing agents on in vivo distribution of 99mTc. Abnormal binding of 99mTc to red blood cells can occur after administration of pertechnetate to patients who have previously received tin-containing agents. Increased blood levels of tin from other causes may have similar effects.

Low back pain progresses to chronic low back pain (CLBP) in 5-10 per cent of patients. A Multi-disciplinary Pain Management Programme was tested in 20 patients (m = 4, f = 16). This regime involved psychological and behaviour modification strategies, combined with intensive exercise. Treatment outcome in terms of impairment was assessed by lumbar flexibility, trunk muscle endurance and pain. The disability assessed was exercise fitness and handicap was assessed using the Sickness Impact Profile (SIP) to define the impact of the condition on the patient's life. Overall the patients showed significant improvement (p < 0.05) in all of the measured variables. Patients with on-going litigation however (n = 11) showed no significant improvement in the SIP quality of life score, although they shared the significant improvements attained by the whole group in the domains of impairment (lumbar flexibility, trunk muscle endurance and pain) and disability (exercise fitness).
Debate is presented as a valuable learning activity for teaching critical thinking and improving communication skills. Included in the discussion are a brief history of the use of debate as a teaching strategy, the responsibilities of the teacher and learner when using debate in the classroom, and its many advantages for developing competencies in communication and critical thinking.
