Concentrations of metallothionein and metals in malignant and non-malignant tissues in human liver.

Concentration of metallothionein in the malignant and non-malignant tissues of the human liver was determined by the Cd-hem method. The concentration of metallothionein was high in the non-malignant tissue (471 +/- 306 micrograms/g). Metallothionein in the non-malignant tissue was mainly Zn-thionein and metallothionein-bound Zn was a major chemical form of Zn in the non-malignant tissue. The concentration of metallothionein in the malignant tissue was 75.6 +/- 79.6 micrograms/g, and significantly lower than that in the nonmalignant tissue. A strong, positive relationship was observed between the Zn and metallothionein concentrations, and the regression equation was MT (microgram/g) = -94.7 + 11.9 Zn (micrograms/g).

Pupillary elongation after anterior chamber lens implantation.

Pupillary elongation was seen along the lens loop in four of 12 eyes that had Simcoe-SAC3 lenses and two of six eyes with Kelman-MT3 lenses. Gonioscopy, especially in the eyes with the Simcoe lens, showed the iris overriding a lens loop, with goniosynechias and scattered pigmentation in the angle. Argon laser photocoagulation of the overriding iris was ineffective.

Bronchial venous plexus and its communication with pulmonary circulation.

This study was undertaken to clarify the microvascular anatomy of the normal human bronchial circulation, focusing on the bronchial venous system and its communication with the pulmonary circulation. Ten normal lungs obtained at autopsy were studied. Bronchial arteriography was performed in six lungs, pulmonary arteriography in two lungs, and pulmonary venography in another two. Using radiologic methods, including microradiography, and serial histologic sections, we found numerous bronchial venous plexuses around the airways and blood vessels into which the bronchial capillaries drained. Frequent communications of the venous plexuses with the pulmonary veins and neighboring alveolar capillaries were also demonstrated. The bronchial venous plexus and its close connection with the pulmonary circulation may be important in various pathologic conditions involving the interstitial space, such as interstitial pulmonary edema.

Sclerotic bone metastasis: radiologic-pathologic correlation.

Radiographic appearances were correlated with histologic findings in sclerotic bone metastases. For this purpose, undecalcified ground sections were made from lumbar vertebrae obtained at 12 autopsies. The primary tumor sites were the prostate gland in five cases, the breast in three, the lung in two, the stomach in one, and the urinary bladder in one. After Villanueva bone staining and methyl methacrylate embedding, 1-mm-thick ground sections were made for low-kilovoltage contact radiography. In sclerotic bone metastases, new bone is deposited on preexisting trabeculae and in the intertrabecular spaces, forming lacy networks. The radiographic indications of these histologic changes are trabecular thickening, marginal obscurity (the "silhouette" sign), and homogeneous dense sclerotic change. The silhouette sign in bone is a new concept, one that is helpful when the changes in density are not reliable.

Centrilobular lesions of the lung: demonstration by high-resolution CT and pathologic correlation.

To determine the value of high-resolution computed tomography (HRCT) in the diagnosis of diffuse pulmonary diseases, a direct HRCT-pathologic correlative study was performed using four inflated and fixed lungs from autopsy. In normal lungs, the smallest pulmonary artery resolved by HRCT was 200 microns in diameter; the artery was accompanied by the terminal bronchiole and the first-order respiratory bronchiole. The distance from the vessel to the corresponding lobular border ranged from 3 to 5 mm. These results suggest that the centrilobular area or the area around the terminal or respiratory bronchioles can be recognized with HRCT. In addition, the authors confirmed that centrilobular emphysema and centrilobular tuberculous nodules can be diagnosed with HRCT. Thus, HRCT can demonstrate the location of pathologic changes within a lobule and may be helpful in the differential diagnosis of diffuse pulmonary diseases.

Histopathological changes in transplanted mouse mammary carcinoma following hyperthermia with or without radiation.

The histopathological effects of hyperthermia with or without radiation were investigated in a transplanted mouse mammary carcinoma. Since the histopathological changes following hyperthermia differed greatly between the center and periphery of a tumor, we analyzed the changes in each area separately according to a semi-quantitative method developed by us. Three days after hyperthermia at 44 degrees for 45 min, undamaged tumor cells were found mostly in the tumor periphery adjacent to normal tissues. This phenomenon was observed when the entire tumor could be heated almost homogeneously. When a tumor was treated by heat alone, the thermal damage disappeared 7 days after treatment. On the other hand, treatment with hyperthermia plus radiation caused pronounced damage in the tumor center and tumor periphery 7 and 14 days after treatment. These combination effects depended on the radiation dose. The present findings demonstrate that combination of high doses of irradiation and hyperthermia is very effective for potentiating the thermal damage in the tumor periphery.
