Immuno-chemotherapy of malignant lymphoma using OK-432, a streptococcal agent.

Clinical trials of immuno-chemotherapy were conducted on malignant lymphoma patients. Patients during the period from 1972 through 1977 were allocated to two groups retrospectively according to the mode of treatment, i.e., chemotherapy alone (historical control group, 35 patients) and chemotherapy with OK-432 (treated group, 15 patients). Comparisons were made of the two groups, which were homogeneous with regard to induction chemotherapy, maintenance chemotherapy, stage and histologic type of disease. The treated group had a higher remission rate, and a longer remission duration and survival than the control groups, especially in patients with Hodgkin's disease but the difference was not statistically significant owing to the limited number of cases.

Stereological analysis of Reinke's crystals in human Leydig cells.

Reinke's crystals in human Leydig cells were analyzed stereologically to assess their functional role. Testicular tissues were taken from seven older men (57--82 years old) with prostatic carcinoma and also from seven younger men (26--38 y.o.) complaining of male infertility. Sections 0.5 micrometer thick, stained with toluidine blue or Heidenhein's iron-hematoxylin were examined by a point-counting method and with a Particle Measurement Computor System (IIMC). When the patients were grouped by age, the mean crystal volume, the number of crystals per cell, the volume of crystals per cell and the volume ratio of crystals to cell were significantly larger in the older age group than in the younger age group. In particular, the latter three variables correlated well with the age of subjects, with correlation coefficients of r = 0.66--0.85. On the other hand, none of these variables had any correlation with the concentration of plasma testosterone. These results indicate that Reinke's crystals can be considered as degenerative products in cell life but not as facultative constituents for testosterone production.

Crystalline structures in human pancreatic beta cell adenoma.

An electron microscopic observation on a pancreatic tumor removed from a 34-year-old woman revealed the fine structural morphology of a functional beta cell adenoma. Characteristic PAS positive crystalline structures were frequently observed in the cytoplasm of the tumor cells. They were not bounded by a membrane and had a rectangular or irregular hexagonal shape. Highly regular patterns were seen as such as lattice or honeycomb and parallel ripple structures. They are similar to the Reinke's crystal or crystalline structures reported in human hepatocytes suffering from several different diseases and considered as a protein-carbohydrate complex. Occasionally, small paracrystalline structures appeared to indicate an immature type of these structures in the opaque fine fibrillar mass. Crystalline or paracrystalline structures were not detected in the normal pancreatic tissue removed with the tumor from the patient.

Effects of ATP on Rb86 clearance of the various organs in rats.

Thirty-seven normal rats were used to investigate the effect of ATP on Rb86 clearance of the various organs. Blood pressure was decreased by intravenous bolus injection of 10 or 50 mug ATP/Kg body weight (b.w.). In 10 mug ATP/Kg b.w. infusion, Rb86 clearance of the heart, liver, and pancreas was increased by 43, 29, and 27% respectively. In 50 mug ATP/Kg b.w. infusion which reduced the arterial blood pressure strikingly, Rb86 clearance of the liver and pancreas was increased; and that of the kidney was decreased significantly. The present study may suggest that the effective nutritional blood flow of the heart, liver, and pancreas is increased by intravenous infusion of 10 mug ATP/Kg b.w.

[In vivo X-ray fluorescent analysis of iodine concentration in the thyroid (author's transl)].

A simple apparatus was made for the X-ray fluorescent analysis of iodine concentration of the thyroid. The apparatus consists of 241Am gamma-ray source of 300mCi and pure Ge detector of 50mm2X5mm. Diverging collimator was designed to achieve a full view of the thyroid. The detectable concentration was 0.2mg iodine/g tissue assuming the coefficient of variance of 30% and the counting time of 5 minutes. Measurement was performed for autopsied 10 thyroids and the results were in good correlation with those by neutron activation analysis (r=0.93). Iodine concentration ranged 0.3-1.2mg/g (mean 0.6mg/g) and compared well with the data in literatures. This technique is useful for the in vivo measurement of thyroidal iodine content in patients.
