Squamous cell carcinoma without accompanying osteomyelitis is a rare complication in chronic soft tissue inflammation. We report on a patient with soft tissue squamous cell carcinoma developing only two years after a war accident.
We report on a case of central pontine myelinolysis in a young alcoholic woman, which occurred after a period of abstinence. There was a latency between the clinical findings and magnetic resonance imaging. The lowest measured sodium blood level was 121 mmol/l.
This paper reports the case of a 36-year-old patient with extensive cavernous transformation of the portal vein, the omentum, and the stomach due to a portal vein thrombosis in the childhood. The morphology of the cavernous transformation using different imaging modalities is demonstrated; etiology and therapeutic procedures are discussed.
The studies were carried out on 30 calves from the 4th to the 25th day of life, divided in three groups; control, glucose and casein. The glucose group was fed a diet containing 25% more glucose than the control. The increased dietary glucose supply decreased cortisol concentration in blood serum. The casein group was fed a diet containing 25% more protein-casein-than the control. The increased dietary casein supply increased the blood serum cortisol concentration. The changes discussed were observed not only during the period of diet application, but also a few days following the termination of the diet.
The sampling procedures in connection with a very sensitive analytical method are described. Results from different areas in Austria are presented and an interpretion of the results is attempted. Some findings are in accordance with measurements from other substances, some are not. The differences most probably depend on several factors like soil type, precipitation, migration of strontium-90, concentration of stable strontium and calcium. No significant rise in the concentration could be found after 1986 thus in accordance with other measurements of strontium-90 contamination after the Chernobyl accident.
The region specific homeotic gene spalt (sal) of Drosophila melanogaster promotes the specification of terminal pattern elements as opposed to segments in the trunk. Our results show that the previously reported sal transcription unit was misidentified. Based on P-element mediated germ line transformation and DNA sequence analysis of sal mutant alleles, we identified the transcription unit that carries sal function. sal is located close to the misidentified transcription unit, and it is expressed in similar temporal and spatial patterns during embryogenesis. The sal gene encodes a zinc finger protein of novel structure composed of three widely spaced 'double zinc finger' motifs of internally conserved sequences and a single zinc finger motif of different sequence. Antibodies produced against the sal protein show that sal is first expressed at the blastoderm stage and later in restricted areas of the embryonic nervous system as well as in the developing trachea. The antibodies detect sal homologous proteins in corresponding spatial and temporal patterns in the embryos of related insect species. Sequence analysis of the sal gene of Drosophila virilis, a species which is phylogenetically separated by approximately 60 million years, suggests that the sal function is conserved during evolution, consistent with its proposed role in head formation during arthropod evolution.
Dual-isotope single-photon emission tomography (SPET) with indium-111 antimyosin and thallium-201 chloride was performed in 54 patients with acute myocardial infarction (AMI) to detect the location and extent of myocardial necrosis (antimyosin) and viable myocardium (201Tl). All patients underwent intravenous thrombolytic therapy with either streptokinase (1.5 million units/90 min) or tissue plasminogen activator (80 mg/90 min). Sensitivity in detecting MI was 91% (49/54 patients). With regard to dual-isotope SPET patterns, patients were divided into three groups: match, i.e. antimyosin uptake in segments with thallium defect (n = 8); mismatch, i.e. no uptake of either of the nuclides in corresponding segments (presence of perfusion abnormalities in the absence of antimyosin uptake) (n = 5); and overlap, i.e. thallium uptake in segments with uptake of antimyosin (n = 41). Coronary angiography and thallium exercise tests were performed in 40 and 45 patients, respectively, 5-14 days after MI. Exercise-induced ischaemia occurred in 66% of patients with overlap, 14% with match and 0% with mismatch (P < 0.05 for overlap vs other groups). If, however, major in-hospital complications (sudden cardiac death, severe arrhythmias; five overlap, three overlap in addition to match/mismatch, two match, two mismatch) were included in the statistical analysis, there was no significant difference between the three groups (P = NS). Thus, although the dual-isotope pattern "overlap" identifies a subgroup of patients with a substantial amount of residual viable tissue after MI and a high probability of exercise-induced ischaemia, this criterion is of limited value in assessing short-term prognosis.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

We report about a patient with a solitary tibial metastasis of a prostatic carcinoma. Metastases to the peripheral skeleton are relatively rare with a frequency of only 1-2% and are mainly found in cases of general spread of the disease. Complaints due to peripheral solitary metastases often cause misinterpretations. Bone scintigraphy is the primary method in the diagnosis of skeletal metastases, and is sometimes supported by specific radiographs. MRI yields excellent images of the extension of the tumor. It is therefore of high diagnostic value in the preoperative definition of the metastatic spread in bone and neighbouring soft tissue structures.
The case of a male patient with a rapidly developing breast tumor is described. Histology demonstrated and intracystic, proliferating papilloma. Mammography, sonography, an magnetic resonance imaging further substantiated the clinical findings.
Oxidation of glycolate to 2 CO2 and 3 H2 (delta G degrees' = +36 kJ/mol glycolate) by the proton-reducing, glycolate-fermenting partner bacterium of a syntrophic coculture (strain FlGlyM) depends on a low hydrogen partial pressure (pH2). The first reaction, glycolate oxidation to glyoxylate (E zero' = -92 mV) with protons as electron acceptors (E zero' = -414 mV), is in equilibrium only at a pH2 of 1 microPa which cannot be maintained by the syntrophic partner bacterium Methanospirillum hungatei; energy therefore needs to be spent to drive this reaction. Glycolate dehydrogenase activity (0.3-0.96 U.mg protein-1) was detected which reduced various artificial electron acceptors such as benzyl viologen, methylene blue, dichloroindophenol, K3[Fe(CN)6], and water-soluble quinones. Fractionation of crude cell extract of the glycolate-fermenting bacterium revealed that glycolate dehydrogenase, hydrogenase, and proton-translocating ATPase were membrane-bound. Menaquinones were found as potential electron carriers. Everted membrane vesicles of the glycolate-fermenting bacterium catalyzed ATP-dependent H2 formation from glycolate (30-307 nmol H2.min-1 x mg protein-1). Protonophores, inhibitors of proton-translocating ATPase, and the quinone analog antimycin A inhibited H2 formation from glycolate, indicating the involvement of proton-motive force to drive the endergonic oxidation of glycolate to glyoxylate with concomitant H2 release. This is the first demonstration of a reversed electron transport in syntrophic interspecies hydrogen transfer.
Coronary revascularization in patients with chronic coronary heart disease (CHD) or acute myocardial infarction (AMI) is mainly based on factors such as coronary anatomy, ventricular function, accompanying diseases and the patient's biological age. Rest- or exercise-induced ischaemia should be proven before a bypass operation or percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty. Although a significant amount of ischaemic but still viable myocardium is a necessary condition for successful revascularization, the detection of viable myocardium is of major importance in a rather small subset of patients. These are patients with hibernating (or a combination of hibernating and stunned) myocardium in whom the aforementioned parameters do not yield an unequivocal result. Thallium-201 myocardial scintigraphy with re-injection or rest-redistribution is an established, proven and cost-effective way of detecting viable myocardium. Other methods such as positron emission tomography with different tracers or technetium-99m sestamibi SPET are discussed and compared to thallium-201 SPET. In conclusion, the detection of ischaemic but still viable myocardium is of importance in only a rather small subset of patients with CHD. In this context thallium-201 myocardial SPET is and still remains the method of choice.
Over a period of twelve years we have performed 793 parasternal lymphoscintigrams with microcolloids in 272 patients with unilateral carcinoma of the breast. In 173 patients we were able to follow their course with an average of four examinations and an average period of observation of 48 months. The parasternal lymph nodes could be identified in 59.6% (on the side of the tumour in 55.1%, on the contralateral side in 64.2%). Expressed as an index with maximal value of 1, the (non-)demonstration constant was 0.79 (side of the tumour 0.78, opposite side 0.80). Comparison of the total scans with the initial findings showed general loss of scintigraphic uptake which, however, is not reflected during individual ICR localisation. Patients with the highest prevalence of parasternal metastases showed atypical uptake. There was no change in uptake in those patients who subsequently developed distant metastases.
