[Circadian rhythm of plasm testosterone levels. II. Testosterone levels during the 1st and 2d half-day].

Testosterone in plasma is measured in 50 young males in the morning and in the evening by radioimmunoassay. Peaks are found in the morning. At 07,00 h and 10,00 h the values lie on a plateau: 91,77% at 07.00 h and 90,59% at 10.00 h. The difference is not significant. Significant differences however can be noted in comparison between values in the first and second half-day. The difference between the 07.00 h value and the 16.00 h value amounts to 17,08%; between the 07.00 h value and the 19.00 h value, to 22,6%.

Nutrition behavior of malnourished HIV-infected patients and intensified oral nutritional intervention.

Malnutrition and cachexia are characteristic symptoms of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-1 infection and AIDS. To identify risk situations that might affect nutritional behavior and status and to evaluate the therapeutic effect of an intensified oral nutritional intervention, we analyzed 81 consecutively treated homosexual HIV-infected outpatients with malnutrition retrospectively and could follow the outcome of a nutritional intervention prospectively in 54 of them. Nutritional therapy was ineffective for only 5 of the 54 patients; constant weight loss could be stopped in 31 of the patients, and 18 patients could even gain weight. We suggest intensified oral nutritional intervention should be an integral part of the treatment of HIV-infected patients to prevent or treat malnutrition.

Functional MR of frontal lobe activation: comparison with Wada language results.

PURPOSE: Our purpose was to determine the utility of functional MR imaging in conjunction with a word-generation paradigm in the assessment of language lateralization. METHODS: Functional MR imaging and Wada testing for language lateralization was performed in patients with complex partial seizures during the performance of word-generation tasks. A language lateralization quotient was calculated from the number of activated pixels in the right and left hemispheres. A language laterality score was derived from the Wada results as the percentage of correct responses during right internal carotid artery injection minus the percentage of correct responses during left internal carotid injection. A correlation coefficient between the functional MR imaging results and the Wada language laterality scores was calculated. RESULTS: In 13 patients, hemispheric dominance based on Wada testing was confirmed by functional MR imaging during silent word generation. The Wada laterality scores varied from 100 to -100 and the functional MR imaging scores varied from 100 to -10. The language lateralization scores determined by functional MR imaging correlated significantly with the language lateralization scores derived from Wada testing. CONCLUSION: Functional MR imaging performed during word generation is an accurate method for lateralizing language function in patients with complex partial epilepsy.

Acute liver failure due to temporary hepatic ischemia in the pig.

The model of temporary complete liver ischemia was investigated in 60 pigs in order to produce a disease which resembles liver failure in man. The interval of time leading to death in every animal differed in a wide range. A number of biochemical alterations was of no value as for the prognosis of the animal under investigation. The ammonium in the peripheral blood is elevated during shunting of portal blood around the liver only. Microscopic examinations demonstrated that the damage produced is limited to the hepatic tissue. The lesions were less when ischemia was produced after a longer interval after the operation. The role of processes of regeneration and reparation of liver tissue is discussed.
