To learn whether tumor metastases can be prevented by the immune system, we developed a model for the treatment of mice with syngeneic lymphocytes sensitized against tumor cells in vitro. Mice were given subcutaneously tumor cells that spontaneously metastasized to the lungs. The tumors developing locally were surgically removed and the mice were inoculated with sensitized lymphocytes 1 day later. Prevention of death by lung metastases was the measure of immunotherapy. Only approximately equal to 30-40 percent of mice receiving control treatment survived, whereas approximately equal to 70 percent survived that received lymphocytes sensitized in vitro against the tumor cells. Hence sensitization of syngeneic lymphocytes against tumor cells in vitro and injection of the lymphocytes into the host after removal of a local tumor prevented the development of lethal metastases.
The authors present a case of completely interrupted aortic arch (Type B) associated with ventricular septal defect and patent ductus arteriosus in a child 3 years and 10 months old, who was successfully subjected to complete surgical correction in one procedure. The pre- and post-operative electrocardiographic and hemodynamic data are evaluated. The authors draw attention to the extreme rarity of surgical resolution, in one procedure, of this type of congenital heart disease.

A line (R-3327-A) of androgen-insensitive squamous cell carcinomas of the prostate of Copenhagen rats has been derived from an established line (R-3327) of androgen-responsive tumors R-3327 A tummors have a growth rate of approximately 10 times that of R-3327. The response of R=3327 A to hormonal environment has been determined by measuring the growth rate of the tumor transplanted to males, females, and castrated males. No great differences were observed. The metabolism of testosterone by tumore samples was studied following s.c. injections of the labeled steroid. The results show very little 5alpha-reduction of testosterone compared with that obtained in the prostate gland itself, as well as in the androgen-sensitive R-3327 tumors. A comparison of the presence of 17beta-hydroxy-5alpha-androstan-3-one-binding proteins in cytoplasmic extracts from both lines of tumors shows that the receptor proteins are present only in the androgen-sensitive R-3327 and not in the androgen-insensitive R-3327 A. The levels of the receptor proteins in R-3327 tumors are higher in tumors borne by male than by female animals, and castration of males decreases the amount of 17beta-hydroxy-5alpha-androstan-3-one binding.
The in vitro generation of memory cells reactive to transplantation antigens is described. Blast cells, obtained from rat lymphocytes sensitized on xenogeneic or allogeneic fibroblast monolayers, reverted to secondary small lymphocytes after transfer from the foreign sensitizing to syngeneic monolayers. These secondary small lymphocytes had a limited in vitro life span of 4-6 wk. They manifested properties of memory cells: upon re-exposure to fibroblasts of the sensitizing phenotype, the secondary lymphocytes adhered to the fibroblast monolayer and transformed into blast cells with cytotoxic activity. The response of secondary lymphocytes was rapid, compared to that of normal lymphocytes, and directed specifically against the primary sensitizing antigens.

A bright pocket flashlight was directed into one eye for 10 seconds; the subject then closed the eyelids and reported the sequence of after-image colours observed. Lesions of the visual system which compromised bilateral central colour vision also reduced or abolished the `flight of colours'. This simple bedside test of each eye independently is of value in detecting mild defects of central vision.
