Late results following the Brosch-procedure for treating large mandibular ramus cysts.

The Brosch-procedure and its modification, removal of the lingual cortex, for treatment of large cysts of the mandibular ramus is presented. 29 patients were treated by this method in the period 1961-1979. In a late follow-up it was found that recurrence occurred within 2 years in 8 of the 21 patients with odontogenic keratocysts. No recurrence could be found in patients with other cysts. Seven of the recurrences occurring within the first 2 years were treated under local anaesthesia. One patient with Gorlin's syndrome refused further treatment and 9 years postoperatively cystic expansion of the whole ascending ramus and ipsilateral mandibular body was present. It was noted that bone regeneration, irrespective of the nature of the causative cyst, is generally complete in two years.

Long-term results after horseshoe sandwich osteotomy of the edentulous maxilla as a preprosthetic procedure.

The long-term results in 30 patients with maxillary atrophy who have been operated on using a horseshoe sandwich osteotomy and interpositional bone grafting are reported. The postoperative period ranges from 1-4 years. Lateral cephalometric X-rays, models and clinical investigations served to determine the resorption rate and the postoperative results. It could be shown that the vertical resorption rate amounts to 1.8 mm (20%) after 3 years. The sagittal resorption rate was about 1 mm with a wide individual range. Clinical investigation revealed satisfactory results in 28 patients.

[A new implant system for the fixation of facial prostheses].

A newly developed titanium implant system is useful for the fixation of facial prostheses. Due to the osteointegration of this material the system can also be used for the treatment of anatomically less favorable cases. The clinical results achieved to date are good.

[Deep freeze bank bone material for maxillofacial reconstructions].

The use of deep freeze bank bone grafts in maxillofacial surgery is described. The prerequisites for establishing a bone bank and the selection of bone graft material and donors are discussed. The use of deep freeze graft material is possible in virtually any area of maxillofacial surgery. Thus, patients with minor defects can be spared the stress of autogenous bone removal. The potential risk of disease transmission is emphasized.
