[Effects of cytochalasin B and colchicine on dental cytodifferentiation in vitro].

The effects of various concentrations of cytochalasin B and colchicine on the polarization of odontoblasts and ameloblasts of mouse tooth buds cultivated in vitro, were studies. It was shown that cytochalasin B, deside its action on the microfilaments, had important cytotoxic effects; dilatation of the odontoblast's processus, accumulation of secretory granules in the Golgi apparatus, dilatation of mitochondria, inhibition of polarization or depolarization of odontoblasts and ameloblasts. These modifications resulted chiefly from the lesion of microtubules which seem to play an important role in the polarization of the cells studies.

[Hepatic and renal toxicity of paracetamol in chronic alcoholic patient].

After taking paracetamol regularly in therapeutic doses, a non-cirrhotic alcoholic subject developed hepatic necrosis and acute renal failure. This case is compared with 13 others found in the literature, and the clinical, biochemical and histological characteristics of such accidents are described. The severity of the acute renal failure is proven by the fact that 50% of the patients had to be put under dialysis. The potentiation of acetaminophen renal and hepatic toxicity by alcohol toxicity is discussed. The principal mechanism of enhancement is the activation of the cytochrome P 450 system associated with depletion of intracellular glutathione.

Ultrasonography, angiography, computed tomography and magnetic resonance in nodular regenerative hyperplasia of the liver: report of a pseudo-tumoral case.

Ultrasonographic, computed tomographic, and angiographic abnormalities of nodular regenerative hyperplasia have been described in very few cases. We report here the case of a 50-year-old man with round, well-limited hypoechogenic lesions involving the two lobes of the liver, and hypervascular, poorly delineated angiographic lesions. Computed tomography and magnetic resonance of the liver were normal. Histological examination of large liver specimens provided by intraoperative biopsy allowed the diagnosis of nodular regenerative hyperplasia. Such a pseudo-tumoral ultrasonographic and angiographic pattern must be recognized in order to avoid diagnostic and therapeutic mistakes, especially since percutaneous liver biopsy usually fails to diagnose this disease.

[Mycobacteria encountered in Djibouti].

The authors studied 198 strains of mycobacteriae from different sources, but mainly from bronchial secretion and adenoid pus or poundings. Because the preponderance of peripheral adenoid tuberculosis, we might fear a focus of Mycobacterium bovis. But this study gives leave to state positively that Mycobacterium tuberculosis hominis is almost exclusively the responsible and consequent by that there is an human reservoir almost exclusive. On the other hand, study of primary and secondary resistances to anti-bacillary drugs leads to express some concern particularly vis a vis modern treatments utilized as a matter of routine.

What can be expected from the cytologic examination of cervicovaginal smears for the diagnosis of Chlamydia trachomatis infections?

The value of Papanicolaou-stained smears for the diagnosis of chlamydial infections is still disputed. A comparative examination of smears from infected and uninfected women has allowed the proposal of a new scheme for the interpretation of the cytologic abnormalities associated with chlamydial infection. In particular, the appearances of metaplastic cells were classified, and two smear types were found to have the highest sensitivities and positive predictive values: smears in which the metaplastic cells had (1) intracytoplasmic vacuoles containing polymorphonuclear leukocytes or (2) numerous small intracytoplasmic vacuoles containing a central eosinophilic granule. The sensitivity of this method is low, however; cytology cannot replace bacteriologic identification for the diagnosis of chlamydial infections. Nevertheless, the examination of Papanicolaou-stained smears could be considered as a screening tool in low-risk populations; provided that all of the cytologic features were considered, presumptive diagnoses of chlamydial infections could be obtained.

[Acute hemorrhagic edema in infants: role of adenoviruses? Apropos of a case].

A case of acute hemorrhagic oedema of the skin is reported. About it we discuss: Anatomo-clinical data, similar to immune complex type III hypersensitivity vasculitis. Antigen has never been defined. In our case adenovirus can be discussed. Evolution is usually benign, but lethal intestinal complications have been described. Nosologic relation with anaphylactoid purpura.

[Bronchial myoblastoma with cartilage injury (author's transl)].

The authors present a new case of bronchial myoblastoma the particularity of which is the partial destruction of bronchial cartilages. This unusual aggressivity of the tumor facing the toughest bronchial structures does not seem to be an unfavourable prognosis element. Two years after resection, the tumor hasn't recurred.

[Efficacy of measles vaccination in young malnourished African children].

A survey aiming at assessing the anti-measles vaccination efficiency among malnourished children, 1-3 years old, has been conducted in rural Upper-Volta. The haemagglutination inhibition technique has been used and antibodies titers higher or equal to 20 were considered as markers of protective immunity. Malnutrition does not seem to be a factor that decreases the anti-measles antibodies production, because there is no significative difference between seroconversion percentages of well and malnourished children. It is proposed that a new serological technique would be useful in the assessment of actual post-vaccinal immunity, mainly in children with ages ranging from 6 to 12 months old.

[Production of oxygenated free radicals and the role of exogenous antioxidants in liver transplantation in rats].

It has been suggested that, in transplantation organs, the lesions observed after conservation then reperfusion could be related to the formation of oxygenated free radicals. The aim of our work was first to verify the hypothesis that oxygenated free radical are formed after ischaemia-reperfusion of the liver, then to evaluate the effects of the allopurinol and glutathion, known antagonists of oxygenated free radicals, contained in the University of Wisconsin conservation fluid. The University of Wisconsin solution was compared with a Collins solution which does not contain oxygenated free radical antagonists. An orthotopic liver transplantation model was used in Wistar rats. Three groups were studied. In the control group, 5 rats underwent laparotomy then were closed with no surgery being performed. In the Wisconsin group (n = 6) and the Collins group (n = 6) the livers were washed and conserved in the corresponding solution at 4 degrees C before transplanting. Plasma levels of malonyldialdehyde, measured by high performance liquid chromatography, were used as a marker for the formation of oxygenated free radicals. Impaired liver function was assessed on the basis of mortality and serum transaminases, alkaline phosphatase and total bilirubin levels. Liver biopsy was performed at sacrifice. The level of malonyldialdehyde was significantly higher in the transplanted groups compared with the control group (p < 0.01). There was no difference between the Wisconsin and the Collins groups. Hepatic function was significantly reduced in the transplanted groups compared with the control group (p < 0.05). There was no significant difference between the Wisconsin and the Collins groups.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)
