Pseudomyxoma peritonei: treatment with intraperitoneal 5-fluorouracil.

Four patients with pseudomyxoma peritonei associated with mucinous tumors of the ovary were treated with cytoreductive surgery followed by intraperitoneal (IP) 5-fluorouracil (5-FU). CA-125 was elevated in three, and ca cinoembryonic antigen (CEA) in one patient; both fell to within normal levels following treatment. Two patients underwent reassessment laparotomy and one a reassessment laparoscopy with no evidence of disease following chemotherapy. The fourth patient refused surgical reassessment but remains clinically free of disease. Intraperitoneal 5-FU appears to be effective in pseudomyxoma peritonei. Précis: Four patients with pseudomyxoma peritonei associated with ovarian tumors were successfully treated with surgery and intraperitoneal 5-FU.

Sarcoma of the uterine cervix: clinicopathologic findings in three cases.

The clinicopathologic findings in two patients with cervical stromal sarcoma and one with cervical leiomyosarcoma are presented. The patients were 35, 46, and 45 years, respectively. They presented with vaginal bleeding, vaginal discharge, and a cervical mass of less than 5 months duration. A hysterectomy with bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy was performed in each case. One patient received preoperative radiation therapy. Two patients with follow-up manifested hematogenous metastasis.

The endodermal sinus tumor: special features.

Eight cases of endermal sinus tumor, two extragonadal and six gonadal, seen at the American University of Beirut are reviewed. Three of them present special clinical and pathologic features that further substantiate the extraembryonic origin of this teratoid tumor and its association with dysgenetic gonads. We consider the two histologic types, endodermal sinus pattern and polyvesicular vitelline architecture, to be part of the same tumor. The prognosis in this series was unfavorable.
