Gastrointestinal effects of metoclopramide in man. In vitro experiments with human smooth muscle preparations.

Metoclopramide (N-(diethylaminoethyl)-2-methoxy-4-amino-5-chlorobenzamide) has been investigated with human gastrointestinal smooth-muscle preparations in vitro. Small-intestinal and colonic circular muscle was contracted by metoclopramide. This effect was antagonized by atropine. Gastric and colonic longitudinal muscle was sensitized by metoclopramide to acetylcholine. Atropine acted here as a partial antagonist of metoclopramide. The interference of acetylcholine and metoclopramide is of a hitherto undescribed pharmacological type. The effects of metoclopramide in vivo-where its action is predominantly on the stomach and pylorus-are not fully explained by these in vitro experiments in which the effect was found to be most pronounced on the colon.

[Kallman's syndrome combined with aortic valve anomaly and epilepsy].

Kallman's syndrome is defined clinically as hypogonadotropic hypogonadism associated with anosmia and other congenital abnormalities. There is no report on Kallman's syndrome coexisting with aortic valve anomaly and epilepsy in the available literature. Therefore, the authors considered worthy presenting a case of a 36-years male [correction of female] patient with Kallmann's syndrome combined with aortic valve anomaly, epilepsy and hyperostosis frontalis. Disease history data, clinical examination, the results of hormonal tests and USG helped to establish the diagnosis. Diagnostic and therapeutical problems in such cases have also been discussed.

[Churg-Strauss syndrome: two cases histories].

Two cases of Churg-Strauss syndrome with severe polyneuropathy have been diagnosed according to clinical and histopathologic criteria. Perforation of small intestine, successfully treated with surgery, was observed in one of two cases. The resected part of gut presented specific histologic picture of Churg-Strauss syndrome.

Effect of inderal on insulin secretion, glycemia and FFA concentration in normal subjects and diabetics.

In 20 cases of adult-type diabetes and in 10 healthy controls insulinemia, glycemia and free acids concentration were determined under basal conditions, after glucose load and after administration of inderal and glucose. After intravenous injection of inderal basal insulinemia fell in controls but this fall was statistically not significant, while in diabetics no evident changes of insulinemia were observed. Following inderal injection and oral glucose a statistically significant drop in insulinemia was observed in controls but not in diabetics. In both groups inderal injection was without any significant effect on glycemia before as well as after glucose load. In both groups a significant decrease occurred in the level of free fatty acids and inderal had no effect on it.
