[Rhino-cerebral mucormycosis and hematological neoplasia].

Mucormycosis is a rare infection that occurs in immunocompromised patients. The rhinocerebral form presents in diabetics as a severe necrotizing sinusitis and is not frequent in patients with haematologic malignancies. Diagnosis requires direct examination and culture of biopsy specimens. Two patients with rhinocerebral mucormycosis and haematologic neoplasms (Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma and acute myeloblastic leukaemia) are described. Both patients had severe drug-induced neutropenia when the infection appeared. One patient died in spite of aggressive treatment with surgery and amphotericin.

Successful zidovudine therapy for HIV-related severe thrombocytopenia. Report of a sustained remission.

Five patients, two homosexuals and three drug abusers, with HIV-related severe thrombocytopenia, four of whom had also bleeding episodes, experienced a full remission of thrombocytopenia after 1,200 mg/day zidovudine treatment. None of the patients had acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) or AIDS-related complex. Platelet counts began an upward trend at the end of the 3rd week and reached values higher than 140 x 10(9)/l towards the end of the 8th week of treatment. Patient's platelets remained stable after more than 4 months of active treatment. This is the first report of zidovudine-induced long-term remission of HIV-associated severe thrombocytopenia.

[Drug surveillance for adverse reactions in patients with human immunodeficiency virus infection].

Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) carrier patients experience several secondary effects with drugs, being mainly skin reactions and myelosuppression. Owing to this, close observation of patients is necessary with regard to therapeutic and prophylactic schedules. In this paper, we describe the secondary effects of zidovudine in 60 patients of groups III and IV from CDC. The main toxicity was found in bone marrow; with anemia in 50% and leukopenia in 53% of patients. Finally, the more frequent secondary effects of therapy for opportunist infections are analysed. A guide for identifying the drugs' secondary effects is also included, based on our experience and on a wide range of literature reviews.

[Effect of home-processing in the preparation of pinto beans (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) on the tannin content and nutritive value of proteins].

A 3(2) factor design was carried out in order to investigate the different home-cooking treatments applied in the preparation of pinto beans (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) on the nutritive value of their protein. The factors studied were previous soaking, type of cooking and addition of cooking broth. Biological evaluation of the protein was performed, and the protein efficiency ratio (PER) and apparent digestibility of the protein (DAP) values were obtained. The tannin content was measured in hulls, cotyledons and in the cooking broths of each experimental treatment. The most significant effect of the PER value was the type of cooking (P less than 0.0001), followed by the addition of cooking broth (P less than 0.05) as well as a significant interaction between cooking method and addition of broth (P less than 0.025). Soaking did not have significant effects per se or through its interactions in relation to PER. The highest values for PER and DAP were obtained with the boiling treatment without broth. The detrimental effect of the cooking broth can be explained by its tannin content (108.5-272.25 mg Eq. catechin/100g).

[Sodium, potassium and calcium content in regional dishes consumed in Sonora, Mexico].

The content of sodium, potassium and calcium was determined in 15 regional dishes, by atomic absorption spectrophotometry. The Na:K ratio was high in most of the dishes due to the high sodium content and low content of potassium found. The higher sources of the studied minerals were "tortilla de harina" with 1,372.8 mg/100 g of sodium; "chorizo con papas" with 466 mg/100 g of potassium, and "calabacitas con queso" with 244.1 mg/100 g of calcium. Two of the dishes considered as desserts, "capirotada" and "arroz con leche" showed the lowest Na:K ratio (0.66 and 0.81, respectively).

[Carbon tetrachloride poisoning: a report of 3 cases].

Carbon tetrachloride is a toxic solvent easily obtained in our country. 3 cases of poisoning by accidental inhalation at place of work. The main clinical manifestations were acute renal failure and toxic hepatopathy. All patients, had a good evolution with dialysis therapy after a few weeks. We comment on some possible additional therapies to be used in treating patients with severe poisoning due to carbon tetrachloride.

[Clinical study of tuberculosis in immunocompromised patients].

We have reviewed the clinical histories of 1,815 immunocompromised patients seen in "La Paz Hospital" over a period of 6 years, in order to study the incidence and clinical forms of tuberculosis (TB) in this group of patients. We have distributed the patients into three groups: Group A: 1,372 patients with neoplasia, Group B: 173 patients under immunosuppressor treatment, and Group C: 270 intravenous drug abusers (IVDA). 53 patients developed TB (2.9%): Of these, 31 belonged to group A (2.25%), 14 to group B (5.78%) and 8 to group C (2.96%), resulting in an incidence 50 to 100 times greater than the calculated for the Spanish general population (0.05%). There is a greater incidence of extrapulmonary and atypical forms in IVDA and patients under immunosuppressor treatment. Patients with neoplasia do not present differences in these aspects with regard to immunocompetent patients. If the TB is diagnosed and treated on time it is a potentially curable disease and the immunosuppressed state does not condition a worse response to treatment.

[Characterization of the nutritional potential of tepari bean (Phaseolus acutifolius) grown in Mexico].

The chemical, physical, antiphysiological and biological quality of the protein of three varieties (white, brown and black) of tepary bean (Phaseolus acutifolius) were studied. Its proximate composition was determined, as well as water absorption, hardness of the seed, tannin content, trypsin inhibitors and lectins. Beans were also submitted to differential scanning calorimetry of the starch. The biological quality of its proteins was also established, based on the protein efficiency ratio (PER) and protein apparent digestibility. It was found that the protein content of the bean was high (25%). The white variety had the highest water absorption and the lowest hardness of the seed when compared with the other varieties (p less than 0.05). The black variety had a lower starch gelatinization energy and a higher cooking time than the white and brown varieties. The tannin content of the three varieties was low, particularly in the white one. The trypsin inhibitor and lectin content were relatively high in the raw beans, but disappeared almost totally during cooking. The biological quality of the tepari proteins was higher than that of the common bean cultivated under the same conditions, More evidently so in the white bean (PER = 1.48 as compared to 1.23 in pinto bean). It can be concluded that the tepary bean is a potentially good protein source and has also a great potential ad donor of genes for the obtention of better bean varieties from the culinary, nutritional and toxicological points of view.
