[Farmer's lung disease in the Aveyron department (a retrospective study of 82 cases)].

The authors present a retrospective study of 82 cases of farmer's lung disease in the Aveyron department. Observations were selected on precise diagnostic criteria classified on acute (8 cases), progressive (69 cases) and chronic alveolitis (5 cases). They observe an almost exclusive repartition in the bovine breeding areas, which are regions of large hay culture and of high humidity. They show the annual repartition of cases is strongly linked to the pluviometry of the previous hay-making. They underline the fact that the modernising of agricultural work reduces some factors favourable to the disease but can promote new ones.

[Anticancer chemotherapy: practical management and medical coordination (author's transl)].

The authors have studied the conditions of application of a protocol of palliative chemotherapy in breast cancers for the first 100 patients undergoing this protocol. The overall management of the treatment has been satisfactory. The medical team from the cancer center has directed the treatments; however, their participation, although substantial has been limited. The participation of other doctors, especially general practitioners, has been important and of good quality. The coordination between the various doctors has been almost always satisfactory. The authors stress the positive aspects of this study: the protocol has been respected in the majority of the cases; the duties have been well distributed among the various participating doctors; good medical cooperation leaves only a few minor details which could be improved. These results encourage the continuation of an approach whereby the general practitioner participates fully with the oncologic team in patient management and cancer control.

Subcellular distribution of cytochrome c oxidase, monoamine oxidase and lactate dehydrogenase in the developing chick telencephalon.

The distribution of cytochrome c oxidase monoamine oxidase and lactate dehydrogenase, together with protein, after isopycnic centrifugation of a crude mitochondrial fraction of chick telencephalon homogenate in a linear sucrose density gradient, was followed during late embryogenesis and postnatal maturation. Two main populations of subcellular organelles differentiate; they were characterized biochemically and analyzed by electron microscopy. One population, with a progressively defined mean buoyant density of 1.170 g/ml, exhibited a high relative activity of monoamine oxidase, with a low and relatively constant cytochrome c oxidase/monoamine oxidase activity ratio. This population was composed of free mitochondria and mitochondria enclosed in nerve endings, and possibly of mitochondria of perikaryal and glial origin. A second population, with a progressively well defined mean buoyant density of 1.182-1.186 g/ml, exhibited a high relative activity of cytochrome c oxidase, with a high and increasing cytochrome c oxidase/monoamine oxidase activity ratio. The biochemical and functional significance of these results were discussed.

[Prognostical factors of breast neoplasms without metastasis. Synthesis by a multifactoral analysis].

Multifactorial analysis by dichotomous split was applied to a consecutive series of 541 female breast cancer patients without detectable metastasis at onset of treatment. These patients were entirely treated in the same institution (Fondation Bergonié), in the years 1960-1974. This multifactorial analysis sets a hierarchical order among the different prognostic factors and defines groups of patients homogeneous for metastatic risks. The significant prognostic factors in these series are : number of malignant axillary nodes; location and size of tumour; state of adjacent skin; relations with thoracic wall; pre or post-menopausal status; inflammatory signs; thermographic and mammographic data.

[Study of 728 cases of children with acute articular rheumatism, divided into 2 similar groups observed at an interval of 10 years].

A group of 364 children treated for acute rheumatic fever between 1955 and 1961 was compared with a similar group of 364 cases matched for age between 1965 and 1972, treated in the same fashion. In the second group an increase was found in the percentage of first attacks compared with relapses, indicating an improvement from prophylaxis. Cardiac involvement on admission, in first attacks, is equally common in both groups but more severe in the first group: in relapses, the severity of cardiac involvement increases with the number of previous attacks. The course of the carditis with corticosteroid treatment is the same in both groups. The reduced severity of the cardiac involvement in first attacks in the recent group suggests a role played by earlier diagnosis, antibiotic therapy previous to hospitalization, or variations in the epidemic nature of the disease.

Nucleic acids-protein interactions. Conformational changes induced by the binding of aromatic amines to polyadenylic acid.

The binding of Tryptamine, Serotonine, Phenylethylamine and Histamine to poly(A) in its single stranded form at pH 7 leads to a decrease of its circular dichroism (C.D) amplitude without any appreciable alteration of the shape of the C.D. spectrum. The magnitude of the effect depends on the size of the aromatic ring and decreases in the order : tryptamine greater than tyramine greater than phenylethylamine greather than histamine. A method is described which allows the calculation of association constants from C.D. data. The C.D. amplitude decreases linearly with concentration of bound molecules. Binding of aromatic amines to poly(A) leads to a change in the proton chemical shifts of both the amine and the poly(A) protons. Quantitative analysis of P.M.R. data demonstrates that the shifts of poly(A) protons are linearly related to the concentration of bound molecules.

[Treatment of Hodgkin's disease, clinical stage I and II. Results obtained in 100 patients by combination of 1 or 2 cycles of chemotherapy with radiotherapy].

The results obtained by chemo+radiotherapy in 100 patients with Hodgkin's disease at stage I or II as defined by clinical and radiological staging are analysed. All patients were treated by chemotherapy followed by radiotherapy; 74 received a complement chemotherapy after the radiotherapy. Statistical analysis emphasizes the usefulness of associating two cycles of chemotherapy with the classical radiotherapy. With this treatment which gives a constant remission rate of about 90% a long-term chemotherapy is no longer necessary and the interest of exploratory laparotomy becomes negligible.

[Preparation and testing of different antibrucellic vaccines].

From a highly virulent Brucella melitensis strain of human origin, different vaccines of good antigenic quality are obtained, ranging from the very agglutinogenic oily type vaccine to the totally non-agglutinogenic oily type vaccine. The non-agglutinogenic vaccine is obtained by an original method consisting of submission of the original brucella to several subcultures in the presence of a small quantity of antiserum and clonal selection of a population. The strain finally selected is totally non-agglutinogenic and its biochemical characteristics are hardly different from those of the original strain; it conserves good antigenicity and compares favourably with the other non-agglutinogenic vaccines tested.

Interaction of aromatic residues of proteins with nucleic acids. Circular dichroism studies of the binding of oligopeptides to poly(adenylic acid).

The binding of peptides containing lysyl and aromatic residues to poly(A) in its single-stranded form at pH 7 leads to a change of its circular dichroism (CD) spectrum, which is mainly due to the stacking of the aromatic amino acid with the bases of poly(A). Comparison is made between the binding of peptides having different primary structures which gives indications on the way the peptides bind to poly(A). A method is described which allows the calculation of the binding parameters from CD data. The magnitude of the association constant depends on the size of the aromatic ring and decreases in the order tryptophan greater than tyrosine greater than phenylalanine. The CD amplitude decreases linearly with the concentration of bound molecules. These results are discussed with respect to the role played by aromatic amino acids in complex formation between nucleic acids and proteins.

[Infectious complications of malignant lymphomas. Evaluation of 411 infections observed in 629 patients].

The main clinical and paraclinical characteristics of 411 infections which occured in 629 patients with malignant lymphoma, treated between 1960 and 1973, are reported here. The theoretical interest of such cases is emphasized, they permit one to contrast Hodgkin's disease with other forms of lymphoma in view of the very marked paraneoplastic immune deficiency in the first group. The practical, diagnostic and therpeutic problems raised are exceptionally difficult and may become even more simple with more efficacious anticancer therapy which, curing more regularly patients from their blood disease, avoids the factors which favour these infections.

[Pulmonary embolism and preventive anticoagulant treatment in hospitalized elderly patients. Statistical study of their respective risks].

Pulmonary embolism and preventive anticoagulant therapy of ederly patients in hospital. Statistical survey of their respective risks. The incidence of pulmonary embolism as a cause of death seems the higher as its strikes old people (above 60) affected by cardiovascular diseases and who are bed tied; the interest of preventive anticoagulant treatment (PAT) remains controversial. This matter has been studied over a period of 5 years from the files of a geriatric cardiology department; 455 anatomo-clinical documents have been set up. This survey confirms the frequency of mortality by pulmonary embolism (23,9 %) and its diminution under long-term preventive anticoagulant treatment 6,6 %). The anticoagulant therapy does not increase the risk of haemorrhagic accidents, from the point of view of frequency, but slightly increases it if one considers the number of days spent in hospital. As a conclusion, the preventive anticoagulant treatment seems positive insofar as contra-indications are strictly observed, in particular the digestive ones. The mechanism of some hemorrhagic accidents with or without PAT remains sometimes difficult to explain.
