Expression of HECA-452 in parapsoriasis and mycosis fungoides.

We have investigated the HECA-452 expression in large plaque parapsoriasis (PP) and mycosis fungoides (MF) patients, evaluating the potential role of this biomarker in both cutaneous disorders. Skin specimens from 72 PP and 61 MF patients were selected in this study. We compared their actual histological diagnosis with their previous diagnosis and we found that all 72 PP patients had the same diagnosis as before (stable PP), while 26 out of 61 MF had a previous PP histological diagnosis (evolving PP). Our results show an increased expression of HECA-452 in MF compared to PP (p<0.01). Furthermore, evolving PP showed a significantly higher level of HECA-452 than stable PP (p<0.05). We conclude that HECA-452 expression increases during the natural history of Mycosis Fungoides. HECA-452 could be used as a biomarker for MF and predict which PP evolves to MF.

[Condylomata acuminata: immunological evaluation and interferon therapy].

The distribution of peripheral blood T lymphocytes in 35 patients aged 16 to 49 years with genital warts was studied. Patients with genital warts were found to be less responsive than a control group, and this deficiency was related to duration of genital wart infection. 11 patients affected with long lasting genital warts were treated with interferon. The results are reported and briefly discussed.

Renal carcinoma with a solitary synchronous contralateral adrenal metastasis: a case report.

A case of synchronous contralateral adrenal metastasis of renal cell carcinoma occurring in a 64-year-old male is reported herein. The patient underwent a left transperitoneal nephrectomy for renal cell carcinoma and right adrenalectomy. The postoperative course was uneventful. To our knowledge this is the 14th case of contralateral adrenal metastasis of renal cell carcinoma in the international literature.

[Classical Kaposi sarcoma and volcanic soil in southern Italy: a case-control study].

We tested the hypothesis of a relationship between Kaposi's sarcoma (KS) and volcanic soil by means of a case-control study based on 70 cases of classic KS and 280 hospital controls from the Campania region, an area of active volcanism in the South of Italy. Birth and residence in volcanic areas were associated with approximately two-fold elevated KS risks. If not due to chance, increased risk in the presence of volcanic soil can have different interpretations, including local immune impairment and correlation with unknown environmental or genetic KS predisposing factors.

Prevalence of valvular regurgitation in structurally normal hearts: a colour-Doppler study.

AIM: To evaluate, by colour-Doppler echocardiography, the effects of ageing on the continence of the heart valves in patients with normal hearts. METHODS: We reviewed all the consecutive echocardiographic examinations performed in our laboratory from 1988 to 1994. From a total of 4592 records, 1654 (977 from females and 677 from males) were selected as normal-that is, not having excluded any kind of valvular, chamber or wall pathology of the heart. These records alone were considered in the study. RESULTS: One or more valve regurgitations were evident on 286 of the records (17.3%; 202 from females and 84 from males); regurgitation was always mild and was more frequent in females (20.7% compared with 12.4% of males; P < 0.001). Mitral regurgitation was the most frequent (49.3% of all regurgitant valves), followed by tricuspid, aortic and pulmonary. In age groups 0-17 years and > or = 60 years there was no sex difference in regurgitation. With ageing, there was an increasing trend in prevalence of regurgitation of the mitral, aortic and tricuspid valves in females (P < 0.001, P < 0.001 and P < 0.05, respectively), and of aortic and mitral valves in males (P < 0.001 for both). Multiple regurgitation (two or three valves) was not sex-dependent, but showed an increasing trend with ageing (from 13% to 27.5% of records showing regurgitation; positive trend, P < 0.005). CONCLUSIONS: Prevalence of mild valvular regurgitation is age-dependent, but is more common in women than in men aged 18-59 years; there is no sex-related difference in patients aged 60 years or more.

Pure cutaneous relapsing langerhans cell histiocytosis in an adult.

The histiocytic syndromes represent a group of rare diseases characterized by the proliferation of the mononuclear phagocyte system cells. We report a case of recurrent class I histiocytosis with exclusive cutaneous localization in an adult. Our patient had a 3 cm ulcerated nodule located on the right cheek. Subsequently, new lesions appeared, all having the same clinical evolution characterized by spontaneous resolution with scarring. After a five year follow up no more lesions were observed. The histopathological examination, immunohistochemical profile and electron microscopy of the lesions indicated Langerhans cell histiocytosis.
