Gold storage in the liver: appearance on CT scans.

The authors present one case in which high attenuation values in the liver parenchyma on computed tomographic scans were found in a patient who had been previously treated with colloidal gold for rheumatoid arthritis. Reticuloendothelial storage of gold was proved by biopsy.

[Quantitative evaluation of the phase image in radionuclide ventriculography ].

A functional image is a representation that enhances a particular characteristic of organ behaviour (feature enhancement) with a concomitant reduction or elimination of other informations. The functional image of phase (PI), obtained by Fourier analysis, may be interpreted to represent the onset of counts reduction or contraction in each region of the heart. Phase Spreading (PS), is a parameter derived from PI and represents ventricular temporal behaviour including some spatial information. Phase analysis and PS are very sensitive tools in the diagnosis and characterization of cardiac pathology. PS is a specific indicator of CAD, allows the introduction of normal ranges and is an example of quantitative evaluation of functional images.

[Echographic symptomatology of closed abdominal injuries].

The importance of echography is emphasised in the diagnosis of closed abdominal injuries. The symptomatology of the possible types of alternative revealable by echography--fluid exudates and parenchymal injuries--are discussed in detail. Personal experience of parenchymal injuries to the liver, spleen and kidneys is then described.

[Cutaneous evaporimetry. IX. Cutaneous water loss in old age].

The cutaneous water loss (CWL) were investigated in 15 old human subjects by Evaporimeter Ep-1. The mean value of the CWL resulted 11,9 +/- 4,3 g/h. This result is significantly lower compared with the value of normal people equal to 17, 5 +/- 4,0 g/h as reported in foregoing notes.

[Biological effects of ultrasonics used in diagnosis. Experimental studies on the incorporation of tritiated thymidine into rat hepatocytes].

In order to evaluate the possible effects of diagnostically employed ultrasounds on DNA turnover, 35 Wistar strain rats were subjected to an ultrasonic frequency band of 2.25 MHz for exposure times varying from 10 to 500 seconds. Upon administration of thymidine tritiate, it was observed that capacity to absorb the substance remained largely normal in those rats exposed for up to 40 seconds, but was diminished where longer exposure times were employed.

[Experimental research on hemorrhagic shock in the rabbit. Acid-base equilibrium and survival with 6-methylprednisolone and gelatin administration].

A previously described method was used to induce haemorrhagic shock in the rabbit by removing 40% of the circulating mass. This had been previously established as 2.6 +/- 0.5 kg-1 by a radioisotopic technique. Survivals were determined 1 and 2 weeks later after treatment with 40 mg/kg-1 6-MPD and vascular refilling with 3.5% gelatine equal to the amount removed. The blood gas analysis and EAB findings suggested that haemorrhagic shock includes both a fast and a slow physiopathological stage, and that the results of treatment are strictly linked to the time of its commencement. Metabolic acidaemia and respiratory alkalosis was constant, and all the controls died within 2 days, 6-MPD was not able to normalise the EAB, but ensured 100% survival at 2 weeks. Gelatin brought the lab data close to normal, but only ensured 100% survival at 2 weeks if given immediately after the removal of blood.

[Histoenzymatic changes and dosimetric studies of some organs and areas, using diagnostic radioisotopes. Critical review of a 10-year experiment].

Ten years experience of dosimetry and study of the histochemical changes brought on by internal irradiation are reviewed. The research is broken down into three stages: 1) identification of enzymatic damage in small laboratory animals; 2) study of the dose really absorbed at various points of critical organs of large animals, 3) the collection of histoenzymatic data resulting from research on large animals treated internally with isotopes commonly used in diagnosis.

[Contribution of radiological and radioisotope technics to the study of lung physiopathology].

Reference is made to the problems posed by the physiopathology of the senile lung and the manifold effects of structural deformities. A comparison is made between the possibilities offered by radiological techniques and the quantitative and qualitative evaluation of scintiscans obtained after the perfusion of 131I MAA. Examination of the data from healthy subjects of various ages and those from patients with obstructive bronchopathy and emphysema showed that uniform distribution of the isotope can generally be expected in 2/3 of subjects with "senile lung". Uneven borders and occasionally irregular distribution of radioactivity were noted in the remainder.

[Incidence of hepatic metastases of breast cancer. Scintigraphic study with radiocolloids in 111 patients].

The anatomical and physiological premises of liver scintigraphy with radiocolloids as a useful study in patients suffering from various stages of breast cancer are analysed. A series of 111 cases is then reported. The technique was used on these cases one or more times and revealed the presence of a scintigraphic picture suggesting liver metastasis in 36% of cases (27.5% at first observation). These data proved higher than those previously reported in the literature by other workers. The technique is therefore proposed as a routine investigation in patients suffering from breast cancer.

Vesicoureteral reflux in young patients: comparison of voiding color Doppler US with echo enhancement versus voiding cystourethrography for diagnosis or exclusion.

We assessed the accuracy of voiding color Doppler ultrasonography (US) with echo enhancement for diagnosis or exclusion of vesicoureteral reflux (VUR) versus voiding cystourethrography (VCUG) and evaluated patient tolerance of the echo-enhancing agent. One hundred twenty-two patients (ages range, 1 month to 17 years) with 244 ureterorenal units underwent voiding color Doppler US with echo enhancement, which was followed by VCUG on the same day. After US of the urinary tract, the bladder was filled with saline solution via catheter. Then an echo-enhancing agent was instilled, and color Doppler US was performed. Reflux was diagnosed when microbubbles appeared in the ureter or the pelvicaliceal system. VUR was detected in 98 units. All grades of reflux were identified. In 13 units (13.3%), grade I reflux diagnosed at voiding color Doppler US was not observed at VCUG. No reflux was detected in 146 units by either method. In 231 (94.2%) of the 244 ureterorenal units, there was concordance between the two methods. The echo-enhancing agent was well tolerated by all patients. Voiding color Doppler US with echo enhancement is useful for the diagnosis or exclusion of VUR, being as good as VCUG. Therefore, it may reduce the number of patients exposed to ionizing radiation.

Prevalence of nits and lice in samples of cut hair from floors of barbershops and beauty parlors in Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais State, Brazil.

A louse survey based on samples of cut hair collected from floors of barbershops and beauty parlors was conducted in Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais State, Brazil, from October 1984 to April 1985, as an alternative way to determine the prevalence of pediculosis capitis in the population. Of 475 samples examined for nits, nymphs, or adults of Pediculus capitis, 140 were infested (29.5%). A total of 58 lice and 3,553 nits were found in 33,632.9 g of hair collected, giving a ratio of 0.10 nit/g. Almost 29% of the nits were viable and capable of being transmitted after hatching. There was significant difference among the infestation rates by socioeconomic levels, and samples from barbershops with male customers were the most infested. Based upon the number of haircuts in each sample, we estimated that 5 or 6% of the population might be infested by this species.
