[Intrinsic endometriosis of the ureter. Clinical case].

Endometriosis is defined as the presence of endometrial tissue outside the cavity of the uterus. The urinary tract is rarely affected, only 1 to 11%. Bladder is the most frequent urinary localization while the ureteral involvement is rare. We report a case of intrinsic ureteral endometriosis in a woman with left hydronephrosis, lumbar pain and septic fever. Instrumental and laboratory investigations can hardly lead to a reliable diagnosis of ureteral endometriosis. A final diagnosis is feasible only by histologic examination, which obviously implies surgery.

[Normal anatomy and findings in traumatic pathology of the popliteal system. A MR study].

To date, the lesions of the popliteal system, which are responsible for the so-called postero-lateral knee instability, are still an imperfectly known chapter of knee conditions. We retrospectively analyzed 215 consecutive MR examinations performed May-August 1991 to evaluate MR capabilities in correctly depicting both the normal anatomy and the pathologic conditions of the popliteal system. Using our standard protocols for knee study and two different magnets (0.064 and 0.5 T), we identified 23 lesions of the popliteus and of its meniscal and peritoneal insertions, and 17 lesions involving also other capsular and ligamentous structures of the knee. Coronal T1-weighted images were the best ones to correctly identify normal knee anatomy, whereas sagittal T2-weighted images were more sensitive in detecting popliteal lesions. Our results had clinical or surgical confirmation in all cases.

Humans

[Echography in scrotal trauma].

The Authors report 28 cases of scrotal traumas evaluated during a period of 5 years on an amount of 1.100 scrotal echography: 5 patients with severe scrotal trauma are investigated with echography within 2 hours while the others between 1 and 6 days. Some cases of overlooked trauma were studied some months later. In their experience the authors underline the importance of echography in early diagnosis of scrotal contents lesions which need a surgical exploration and those which allow a medical treatment. Also ultrasound investigation is important in evaluating and in the follow-up the scrotal content lesions caused by trauma.

Gold storage in the liver: appearance on CT scans.

The authors present one case in which high attenuation values in the liver parenchyma on computed tomographic scans were found in a patient who had been previously treated with colloidal gold for rheumatoid arthritis. Reticuloendothelial storage of gold was proved by biopsy.

[Quantitative evaluation of the phase image in radionuclide ventriculography ].

A functional image is a representation that enhances a particular characteristic of organ behaviour (feature enhancement) with a concomitant reduction or elimination of other informations. The functional image of phase (PI), obtained by Fourier analysis, may be interpreted to represent the onset of counts reduction or contraction in each region of the heart. Phase Spreading (PS), is a parameter derived from PI and represents ventricular temporal behaviour including some spatial information. Phase analysis and PS are very sensitive tools in the diagnosis and characterization of cardiac pathology. PS is a specific indicator of CAD, allows the introduction of normal ranges and is an example of quantitative evaluation of functional images.

[Histoenzymatic changes and dosimetric studies of some organs and areas, using diagnostic radioisotopes. Critical review of a 10-year experiment].

Ten years experience of dosimetry and study of the histochemical changes brought on by internal irradiation are reviewed. The research is broken down into three stages: 1) identification of enzymatic damage in small laboratory animals; 2) study of the dose really absorbed at various points of critical organs of large animals, 3) the collection of histoenzymatic data resulting from research on large animals treated internally with isotopes commonly used in diagnosis.

[Contribution of radiological and radioisotope technics to the study of lung physiopathology].

Reference is made to the problems posed by the physiopathology of the senile lung and the manifold effects of structural deformities. A comparison is made between the possibilities offered by radiological techniques and the quantitative and qualitative evaluation of scintiscans obtained after the perfusion of 131I MAA. Examination of the data from healthy subjects of various ages and those from patients with obstructive bronchopathy and emphysema showed that uniform distribution of the isotope can generally be expected in 2/3 of subjects with "senile lung". Uneven borders and occasionally irregular distribution of radioactivity were noted in the remainder.

[Incidence of hepatic metastases of breast cancer. Scintigraphic study with radiocolloids in 111 patients].

The anatomical and physiological premises of liver scintigraphy with radiocolloids as a useful study in patients suffering from various stages of breast cancer are analysed. A series of 111 cases is then reported. The technique was used on these cases one or more times and revealed the presence of a scintigraphic picture suggesting liver metastasis in 36% of cases (27.5% at first observation). These data proved higher than those previously reported in the literature by other workers. The technique is therefore proposed as a routine investigation in patients suffering from breast cancer.

Prevalence of nits and lice in samples of cut hair from floors of barbershops and beauty parlors in Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais State, Brazil.

A louse survey based on samples of cut hair collected from floors of barbershops and beauty parlors was conducted in Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais State, Brazil, from October 1984 to April 1985, as an alternative way to determine the prevalence of pediculosis capitis in the population. Of 475 samples examined for nits, nymphs, or adults of Pediculus capitis, 140 were infested (29.5%). A total of 58 lice and 3,553 nits were found in 33,632.9 g of hair collected, giving a ratio of 0.10 nit/g. Almost 29% of the nits were viable and capable of being transmitted after hatching. There was significant difference among the infestation rates by socioeconomic levels, and samples from barbershops with male customers were the most infested. Based upon the number of haircuts in each sample, we estimated that 5 or 6% of the population might be infested by this species.
