Bolles (1970) proposed a theory of avoidance learning, the species-specific defense reaction (SSDR) hypothesis, which emphasized innate constraints on the response repertoire of rats in aversive situations and minimized the role of reinforcement in avoidance learning. The present paper describes Bolles' (1970, 1971, 1972, 1975, 1978) development of SSDR theory and reviews the empirical tests of its assumptions and predictions. It is concluded that the SSDRs described by Bolles, along with some others, are highly probable in aversive situations but that the response repertoire is not limited to them. Further, there is strong evidence for reinforcement effects in the establishment and maintenance of at least some avoidance responses.

Aggregation of cell surface receptors plays an important role in signal transduction in many receptor systems. In the T cell receptor (TCR), as in many other cell surface receptors, this aggregation results in insolubility in certain nonionic detergents. We have characterized this insolubility for TCR, and we show it is not preexisting in HPB-ALL cells but increases with increasing TCR aggregation. It is not likely to be due to a direct interaction with cellular cytoskeletal elements, as it is not affected by inhibitors of actin or tubulin polymerization. It may be due to interaction with detergent-resistant membrane domains that have been found in various cell types and contain tyrosine kinases, the earliest known participants in TCR signal transduction. This aggregation-dependent insolubility occurs as rapidly as the anti-TCR antibody binds, so the kinetics are consistent with an involvement in signal transduction. It is not, however, dependent on signal transduction, as inhibitors of tyrosine kinases do not inhibit the insolubility. Insolubility is also enhanced by preaggregation of CD4, an important T cell surface molecule which also associates with the tyrosine kinase p56lck.

We have presented recommendations for the optimum acquisition of quantitative two-dimensional data in the current echocardiographic environment. It is likely that advances in imaging may enhance or supplement these approaches. For example, three-dimensional reconstruction methods may greatly augment the accuracy of volume determination if they become more efficient. The development of three-dimensional methods will depend in turn on vastly improved transthoracic resolution similar to that now obtainable by transesophageal echocardiography. Better resolution will also make the use of more direct methods of measuring myocardial mass practical. For example, if the epicardium were well resolved in the long-axis apical views, the myocardial shell volume could be measured directly by the biplane method of discs rather than extrapolating myocardial thickness from a single short-axis view. At present, it is our opinion that current technology justifies the clinical use of the quantitative two-dimensional methods described in this article. When technically feasible, and if resources permit, we recommend the routine reporting of left ventricular ejection fraction, diastolic volume, mass, and wall motion score.
The purpose of this study was to test a theoretical model of the following variables, decentralization, professional autonomy, job satisfaction, and organizational commitment. Data were collected through a comprehensive survey of first-line nurse managers (N = 200) in acute care hospitals with more than 100 beds in British Columbia, Canada. The final model excluded all explored personal characteristics of the nurse manager-gender, health or vitality status, marital status, age, education, and years of supervisory or management experience. Job satisfaction was found to be an important predictor of organizational commitment. However, decentralization was most important because it affected organizational commitment directly, as well as indirectly, through professional autonomy and job satisfaction.
