The purpose of this study was to assess the disposition of radioactivity in rats after single inhalation exposures to varying concentrations of [1,2-14C]-n-hexane. Male Fischer 344 rats were exposed to 500, 1000, 3000 or 10,000 ppm 14C-n-hexane for 6 hr and the elimination of radioactivity followed for 72 hr after exposure. The disposition of radioactivity was dose-dependent, with 12, 24, 38 and 62% of the acquired body burden excreted as n-hexane by the lung with increasing exposure concentration. In contrast, 38, 31, 27 and 18% of the body burden of radioactivity was recovered as expired 14CO2 and 35, 40, 31 and 18% was recovered in the urine with increasing n-hexane concentration. Radioactivity remaining in the tissues and carcass 72 hr after exposure represented 6.1, 8.8, 7.4 and 5.4% of the body burden for the respective exposures. The dose-dependent elimination of radioactivity was apparently due in part to an inhibition of n-hexane metabolism, reflected by a decrease in total 14CO2 and urinary 14C excretion after 10,000 ppm exposure compared to the 3000 ppm exposure.

This study examines the relationship of cellular cholesterol metabolism to oestrogen and progesterone during the menstrual cycle in diabetic and non-diabetic subjects. Nine premenopausal diabetic women were compared to nine non-diabetic women of the same age. Oestrogen, progesterone, lipoproteins, including lipoprotein (a) (Lp(a)) and cholesteryl ester transfer protein (CETP) were determined in serum. Cellular cholesterol content and cellular cholesterol synthesis were measured in mononuclear leucocytes. There was no significant change in serum lipoproteins including Lp(a) during the cycle in either group. CETP activity was significantly higher over the 4 weeks in the diabetic patients compared with non-diabetic subjects (mean 463 +/- 30 mumol l-1 h-1 vs 405 +/- 28 mumol l-1 h-1, p < 0.01). Serum high density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol was significantly lower during the 4 weeks in the diabetic patients (1.7 +/- 0.1 mmol l-1 vs 1.8 +/- 0.1 mmol-1, p < 0.05). Cellular cholesterol synthesis decreased steadily up to the third week in cells from the control subjects whereas there was no significant change in cells from diabetic patients whose cellular cholesterol synthesis was higher at week 3 compared with non-diabetic subjects (663 +/- 54 nmol mg-1 cell protein vs 432 +/- 43 nmol mg-1 cell protein, two-way interaction p < 0.05). There was a significant negative correlation between cellular cholesterol synthesis and serum oestrogen in the non-diabetic subjects (p < 0.05) but not in the diabetic patients.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)
Nursing is multidimensional, interactive, interdisciplinary, and complex. Almost anything that can be said about nursing can be said another way. Some things worth being said and heard will not follow the norms of journal presentation. A forum accommodates the emerging voice, the new format, the innovative approach. Nursing Forum, in an effort to honor the "independent voice" in nursing, presents here the voice who elects to enter the dialogue, but who does so "in another way."
Psychotherapy and sociology are themselves products of mixed marriages; each experiences problems of identity and their children face problems of legitimacy. This paper considers the relevance of some sociological perspectives to the psychotherapeutic process, using the following analogies; (1) Flirtation: Why the attraction? 'going steady' or 'femme fatale'? (2) Marriage: Mutual enrichment, cross-fertilisation and new life? Examples of shared perspectives in the work of E. Becker, Erikson, Goffman etc. Influence of psychosocial contexts on psychotherapeutic processes. (3) Divorce: Too little shared life or too much destructive criticism? If the world within man and the world between men are interrelated, psychotherapy and sociology--although at times uneasy bedfellows--have much to give each other.
BACKGROUND: Gastric digestion of these antigens plays an important role, decreasing the ability to deliver antigens to the gut-associated lymphoid tissue. To overcome this obstacle, microencapsulated antigens from enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC) were evaluated for oral immunization of mice. METHODS: Four groups of 10 each received 3 series of 3 doses each of (1) B subunit of cholera toxin (CTB), similar to heat-labile toxin of ETEC, (2) formalin-killed whole cell ETEC H10407 (FK-ETEC), (3) crude preparation of colonization factor antigen I (CFA/I), or (4) placebo. Serum antibody was measured on day 0 and 60 by ELISA. RESULTS: In group 1 a CTB antibody response was induced in all mice, 3 with 1:105 titer and 7 with 1:106. These antibodies neutralized cholera toxin-induced steriodogenesis of Y-1 adrenal cells. In group 2, 8 mice developed a whole H10407 bacteria antibody titer of 1:100, one 1:200 and one showed no immune response. In the same group, an anti-CFA/I response was observed in 6 mice and anti-LPS in 4 mice as determined by Western blot. All mice in group 3 showed > 1:104 anti-CFA/I antibody titer. Group 4 mice did not develop an immune response to any ETEC antigens. CONCLUSIONS: Microencapsulation appears to be a suitable approach for oral vaccination against ETEC and Vibrio cholerae.

Motor vehicle crashes remain a leading cause of death and injury to young children. Appropriate child safety seats and child safety restraints can provide life-saving protection to children riding in motor vehicles. Many children, however, travel unrestrained or improperly restrained. Consideration of appropriate child safety restraint systems for children is an important aspect of discharge planning and can provide families with the means to prevent unintentional injuries and deaths resulting from motor vehicle crashes.
