[Evaluation of the variations of facial relief of the human skull].

A computer evaluation of 3D trend of bone surface of human skull has been pointed out. By means of projection of dark and light horizontal lines on the skull the authors were able to obtain distortions of lines themselves in a related way to relief. By digitizing prints of the resulting image it was possible to work points and lines in a orthogonal coordinates or to evaluate cord/arch ratios and related surfaces. A 3D information adding to bidimensional image is a convenient performance for comparative studies in cranio-facial superimposition for personal identification and other items.

[Determination of the K+/Na+ ratio in experimental drowning in sea water].

Potassium and sodium content in lung, heart and liver of sea water-drowned mice was measured flame-photometrically after destruction of tissue through nitric-percloric acid. It was found that the ratio of K+/Na+ content in the lung and even in the heart was significantly lower in the drowned group than in the control one; the liver did not show any significant eletrolyte change after drowning. The results are the basis of a test applicable to humans.

[Experimental poisoning with gaseous hydrocarbons: changes in concentrations of propane and butane in the lung and adipose tissue in relation to the time of death].

Postmortal changes of propane, butane and iso-butane concentration in the lung and fat of mice exposed to lethal intoxication with commercial liquid gas are studied. The hydrocarbon tissue concentrations after exposure were determined by gas liquid chromatography. The hydrocarbons progressively decreased in the lung and disappeared, depending on the degree of putrefaction; even in case of remarkable putrefaction, it was still possible to detect them in the fat tissue.

Echocardiographic contrast imaging of the human right heart: a multicenter study of the efficacy, safety, and reproducibility of intravenous SHU-454.

The contrast agent SHU-454 was intravenously injected in 103 patients during echocardiography: 37 mL/patient +/- 7 ml/patient. The quality of the contrast effect was optimal in 13, good in 51, sufficient in 30, and poor in 9 patients; reproducibility was optimal in 38, good in 46, sufficient in 17, and poor in 2 patients. Taste sensation, arm discomfort, or atypical chest pain occurred in 5 patients, premature ventricular contractions in 3. An isolated anginal attack occurred in 1 patient with frequent episodes at rest. A slight reduction in hematologic indices was attributed to hemodilution. Thus, SHU-454 produces a good and reproducible contrast effect with tolerable side effects.

[Evaluation of a series of 137 carcinomas of the endometrium of stage I TNM/UICC].

PURPOSE: To assess retrospectively the long-term results of the combination of surgery and radiotherapy in carcinoma classified cT1. PATIENTS AND METHODS: From 1974 to 1993, 137 women suffering from endometrial carcinoma cT1Nx-0 M0 were entered into the study. The median age was 62 years (range: 39-85 years) and the median follow up was 67 months (range: 0-224 months). RESULTS: Surgery was performal in 132 women (96.35%). For cT1, the 5-year overall and specific survivals were 81.1% and 84.5%, respectively. The 10-year overall and specific survivals were 68.8% and 82.2%, respectively. Concerning cT1pT1, the 5-year overall and specific survivals, were 83.9% and 87.4%. The 10-year overall and specific survivals were 71.1% and 85%, respectively. Histological grade, pelvic lymph node involvement and myometrial infiltration influence significantly the overall and specific survivals of cT1pT1 tumors. According to multivariate analysis, pelvic lymph node involvement was a powerful prognostic factor for both the overall and specific survivals. If we rule out pelvic lymph node involvement, WHO histological grade was a significant prognostic factor. CONCLUSION: Combination of surgery and radiotherapy is still a common procedure for cT1 tumors. When surgery is done before radiotherapy, tailored irradiation may further take place, according to WHO histological grade and pelvic lymph node status.

[Standardization and quality control in the evaluation of proliferation parameters in T1T2, N0N1, M0 breast cancer: multicentric retrospective study II. DNA-ploidy and S-phase fraction].

As part of a clinical research project, proliferative parameters were studied in primary breast cancer: standardization and technical validation of thymidine kinase (TK), thymidylate synthase (TS) and protein tyrosine kinase (PTK) are described. A total of 633 frozen tumor specimens, available in four institutions, was analyzed in three flow cytometry laboratories for DNA content and percentage of S-phase cells (%S) measurement. 1) The standardization step consisted in developing a common protocol for sample preparation; then, common cell suspensions were analyzed in order to perform an inter-laboratory control. Objective guidelines were elaborated to interpret DNA histograms in breast carcinoma. 2) DNA-aneuploidy was observed in 61% of cases of the retrospective series. Compared with DNA-aneuploid tumors, mean %S was significantly lower in case of DNA-diploidy (respectively: 6.4% and 2.2%, p < 0.001). When compared between the four institutions, %S distributions did not differ significantly. 3) %S is strongly correlated with TK, TS and PTK and high percentages were also observed in high grade tumors or tumor without hormone receptors. These results show that a standardization in using flow cytometers and DNA software allows multicenter studies.

[Carcinoma of the bladder with pseudosarcomatous stroma. Presentation of a case].

Carcinoma with pseudosarcomatous stroma of the bladder. Case report. We report a case of transitional cells carcinoma of urinary bladder with pseudosarcomatous stroma in a 54 years old male. The patient was admitted in hospital owing to recidivous haematuria events for about 3 months. Three urine samples were sent for cytological studies that showed the presence of transitional neoplastic cells. Subjected to a cystoscopic examination the patient revealed a roundish peduncled bladder formation of about 3.5 cm. in size. Hence three bladder lesion biopsies were done. The histological sections obtained pointed out the existence of two cellular populations: the first one presented roundish or lengthened, pluristratified cells arranged in solid nests, with transitional morfology and high atypias; the other population had sarcomatoid features characterized by lenghtened cells with hyperchromic nuclei. The two populations were mixed up and there were sometimes carcinomatous areas that merged into sarcomatoid areas. Chondroid areas were also observed. We diagnosed a G3 transitional cells carcinoma with pseudosarcomatous stroma. The lesion, after literature review, results to be somewhat rare and not easily interpretable since it may be confused with carcinosarcoma. The rarity of this case and the problems of differential diagnosis connected with it urged us to this pubblication along with a short review of literature.
