Methadone in pregnancy: clinical-toxicological aspects.

The authors describe their experience with methadone treatment in pregnancy. Thirteen abuser pregnant women were studied under defined obstetrical and toxicological protocol. Newborns were also included in this study. In some cases a complete adherence to therapeutic program, allowing labour under very low methadone dosage (5 mg/day), minimized toxicological neonatal risk. Withdrawal syndrome in newborns was well controlled pharmacologically. The role of the toxicological laboratory during clinical management of drug dependent pregnant women is also discussed.

Accidental death by gasoline ingestion. Case report and toxicological study.

A case of death following accidental ingestion of gasoline is described. Toxicological study, carried out by gas-liquid chromatography head space technique, permitted the identification and quantification of several hydrocarbons in all the viscera and biological fluids. The mechanism of death is discussed on the basis of the anatomopathological findings and quantitative toxicological results.

Mixed agglutination on solid phase (MASP) and its inhibition (IMASP): two immunoassays for soluble ABH group-specific substances.

Two immunoassays are described: mixed agglutination on solid phase (MASP) and inhibition of mixed agglutination on solid phase (IMASP). The MASP assay permits detection and measurement of soluble A, B and H high molecular weight glycoproteins in secretor individuals with a sensitivity at least 800 times greater than the usual inhibition technique. Both secretors and non-secretors can be typed by the less sensitive IMASP test which also permits the detection of low molecular weight A, B and H substances.

Two cases of death associated with the use of lithium carbonate.

Two cases of death associated with the use of lithium carbonate are described. The first one concerns a 39-year-old man who was found suddenly dead on his hospital bed. Toxicologic analysis revealed "therapeutic" levels of lithium, nitrazepam, flurazepam, and phenobarbital. The second case involves a 54-year-old woman initially treated for acute cardiac failure and hypertension, who was finally recognized as a case of lithium intoxication; she died of cardiac arrest without evident cardiac lesions and without lithium ions in serum and urine. The medicolegal aspects of both cases are discussed, with reference to the problems of diagnosis, clinical and toxicological correlations, and the medical responsibility.

Neutralization of the effect of delta 9-tetrahydrocannabinol on barbiturate sleeping time by specific active immunization.

Adult mice were actively immunized with delta 9-tetrahydrocannabinol-bovine serum albumin (delta 9-THC-BSA) conjugate. Control animals were immunized with BSA alone. While the administration of pentobarbital and delta 9-THC to control animals resulted in the well known prolongation of the barbiturate sleeping time, in mice immunized with delta 9-THC-BSA conjugate this effect was almost completely neutralized.
