[Renal pancreatic venous anastomosis: anatomical, clinical and radiological study].

Abnormalities in the left urinary tract have been observed secondary to pancreatopathies. Venous connections between the distal spenopancreatic venous bed and the left adrenal-renal venous system have been demonstrated by cast corrosion technique and by radiographic studies in the cadaver. In all of our anatomic studies, except on one occasion, numerous venous connections between the portal and systemic veins were demonstrated. The intravenous pyelogram and particularly nephrotomography have great value when pathology of the body and/or tail of the pancreas is suspected. Indirect sign on the left renal vein thrombosis on the left side may suggest the presence of a pancreatopathy. With acute and chronic pancreatitis, pseudocyst of the pancreas, and pancreatic carcinomas, we have noticed changes in the left urinary tract.

Selective catheterization of the portal vein and its tributaries. Preliminary report.

The portal vein and its tributaries were selectively catheterized in 90 patients. Only one complication required surgery. This technique not only provides information about the status of the portal circulation and liver parenchyma but can also be used in the treatment of bleeding esophageal varices by selective embolization of autologous clots or inert material.

The deceptive aortic root.

Coronal, horizontal, and sagittal sections through the mid-line are excellent ways of depicting the anatomical position of the aortic root and for studying its topographical relationship to the surrounding vascular structures. Minimal radiographic abnormalities or no abnormalities at all may be present with an enlarged ascending portion of the thoracic aorta. Thus, frontal chest roentgenograms obtained with high kilovoltage, fluoroscopy and left anterior oblique projections should be utilized routinely for the evaluation of the ascending aorta. Calcification of the aortic valve and of the coronary arteries and the study of aortic valve prosthesis also demand a dynamic study and the use of complementary views, such as lateral and both oblique projections.

Cutaneous wounds produced by capsaicin treatment of newborn rats are due to trophic disturbances.

The purpose of this study was to show that the occurrence of skin ulcers observed in animals neonatally treated with the neurotoxin capsaicin coincide with trophic disturbances. In addition, cutaneous lesions increased when self-grooming and scratching behaviors reached maturity. The temporal course of cephalic cutaneous wounds in neonatally capsaicin-treated rats was evaluated in animals wearing and not wearing plastic collars from postnatal day (P) 21 until P45. The collars were used to prevent self-grooming and scratching. Beginning on P21, capsaicin-treated rats under both conditions showed transient skin ulcers distributed throughout the head and neck regions. In the capsaicin-treated group without collars, lesions reached their greatest severity by P40, when self-grooming and scratching behaviors obtained adult characteristics. Furthermore, no lesions were detected after 25 days. In the capsaicin-treated rats that wore plastic collars, the widest distribution of skin lesions occurred on P55, after which time lesions vanished detection by 25 days. In this latter group, the cutaneous lesions were exacerbated when collars were removed. Data suggest that transient cutaneous wounds associated with neonatal capsaicin administration may be mediated via capsaicin-sensitive sensory neurons that are involved in trophic and regenerating neural mechanisms.

[The Mini-Mental State Examination as a selected diagnostic test for dementia: a Colombian population study. GENECO].

INTRODUCTION: Folstein's Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE) is widely used as screening test for cognitive impairment. OBJECTIVE: To test a Spanish version of the MMSE in a population of high illiteracy rate. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Population-based survey of a stratified random sample of urban and rural residents of five regions of Colombia, followed by neurological and neuropsychological evaluation of suspect cases (phase 2). Dementia was diagnosed using DSM-IV criteria. RESULTS: 1,611 subjects age 50 or older filled out both the WHO Protocol for Epidemiologic Studies of Neurological Disorders and a Spanish version of the MMSE; 55.2% of them had three or less years of schooling; 536 individuals with scores below cutoff points were sent to phase 2. Of the population with satisfactory scores in MMSE 366 (34.0%) were evaluated by neurologists to exclude other neurological conditions. Twelve cases of dementia were diagnosed among individuals with scores below cutoff point and one among subjects with high scores. Age-adjusted prevalence was 8.1 per thousand subjects age 50 or over (95% CI: 3.7-12.5); and 34.2 per thousand for ages 75 or over (95% CI: 12.2-56.2). Sensitivity and specificity were 92.3 and 53.7%; 16 of the 19 questions show significant differences (p < 0.001) according to educational level. A gender gap is significant in low educational levels (p < 0.001) but not in subjects with more than five years of schooling. CONCLUSIONS: MMSE scores correlated closely with level of education. Low specificity leads to many non-demented subjects with low educational status requiring further investigation.

[Exocytosis as the mechanism for neural communication. A view from chromaffin cells].

Exocytosis constitutes the main cellular mechanism for secreting neurotransmitters. It entails the fusion of a secretory vesicle with plasma membrane, thus promoting the release of its soluble content. Among the cell models that have provided insight into molecular machinery underlying the succesive steps of exocytosis, adrenal chromaffin cells have taken a prominent place. Exocytosis gave support to the classical quantal theory, which maintains that neurotransmitters are released as discrete packages from the nerve terminals towards the postsynaptic cell. We present here a brief review of the estate of our knowlegments about the secretory vesicle traffic towards the cell membrane and how exocytosis takes place through the so called SNARE hypothesis. We also review the novel mechanisms implicated in the regulation of the late steps of exocytosis as well as their possible role as target for drug therapy
