Effect of ultrasound on the neonatal rat brain.

Six-day-old rat neonates were exposed to 2.25 MHz continuous wave (CW) ultrasound for 5 min at an intensity of 2.5 W/cm2 (SATA). The temperatures on the head surface and in the mouth were measured. There was a higher average temperature elevation in the mouth (9 degrees C) than on the head surface (7 degrees C). Survival differs between control and exposed groups at 30 days after exposure. Ninety percent of the control group lived to 30 days, versus 59.7% for the exposed group. At differing times following exposure, the brains of the pups were removed and tested for enzymatic activities. Changes in acetylcholine esterase and in 2',3'-cyclic nucleotide phosphohydrolase activities were not statistically significantly different from controls. There were no significant differences in brain weight and total protein between control and exposed pups.

Radiation measurement with a solid-state-matrix camera.

A solid-state-matrix camera containing 32 X 32 photodiode array served as the output device on an image intensifier tube. The resulting images had poor spatial resolution but permitted precise measurement of x-ray intensity. Transmission differences of 1% were detectable.

Monomer addition as a mechanism of forming peptide cross-links in the cell-wall peptidoglycan of Streptococcus faecalis ATCC 9790.

The relative amounts of radioactively labelled disaccharide-peptide monomers and peptide-cross-linked dimers and trimers found in the peptidoglycan of Streptococcus faecalis ATCC 9790 were compared to the relative amounts to be expected from two different polymerization mechanisms (random condensation and monomer addition). Data from continuously-labeled, exponentially-growing cells are consistent with a monomer addition cross-linking process, not with a random condensation cross-linking mechanism. This conclusion was supported by data obtained from analyses of cells labeled during valine starvation (and wall thickening), recovery from valine starvation, and pulse and pulse-chase labeling of walls from exponentially-growing cultures.

Computer Diagnosis of Breast Thermograms.

A computer-based technique was developed for the automated diagnosis of breast thermogram. Eighty-five thermograms were digitized and analyzed, and 23 parameters computed for each thermogram. A statistical decision program, based on a linear discriminant analysis technique, classified the thermograms into normal and abnormal categories. The accuracy of classification was evaluated by several techniques and found to be comparable to that of trained thermographers.

Cardiac volume measurement errors.

Measurements of cardiac volumes based on biplane radiographic data exhibit a cyclical variation as the heart is rotated with respect to the radiologic instrumentation. This study develops a theoretical basis for evaluating the measurement errors due to orientation, that explains the cyclical variation. Since this type of measurement error is always one of overestimation, better accuracy will be obtained if several views are performed at varying orientations and the smallest of the resulting values is used as the measurement.
