Reverse Austin osteotomy for correction of acquired static hallux adductus.

Hallux adductus, a horizontal plane deformity, often has an iatrogenic etiology especially as a complication of hallux abducto valgus surgery. A case at Sheridan Park Hospital is described in which the patient developed a steadily worsening static hallux adductus following foot surgery. She underwent further corrective procedures for the hallux adductus 11/2 years later. The authors conclude that if a mild static hallux adductus is observed in conjunction with bunionectomy or other surgery, it should be corrected at that time rather than some years later.

Use of anticoagulants in hospital and community.

Drugs affecting haemostasis can be divided into three main groups depending on which component of haemostasis they affect: coagulation, fibrinolysis or platelet activity. This paper looks at the anticoagulant group of drugs, the main compounds in present use, the indications for use, potential side-effects and the implications for nurses when providing patient care.

Nurse prescribing--the knowledge base.

This article sets the scene for a new Nursing Times series that looks at the knowledge needed for nurses to prescribe from the nurse prescribers' formulary. Although nurse prescribing is still in its infancy, nurses with prescription pads may soon become the norm. We will be looking at the knowledge needed to prescribe laxatives and rectal preparations, wound dressings, skin preparations, oral analgesics, insecticides and anthelmintics.

A guide to nurse prescribing of insecticides and anthelmintics.

Several drug preparations are available to the nurse prescriber to treat parasitic infestations, most commonly head lice, scabies and threadworms. It is vital that the nurse has a thorough knowledge of the types of preparations available, together with an understanding of the non-pharmacological interventions to eradicate infestation. Many people may be treated without the intervention of a doctor, but the nurse prescriber should ensure that those who are affected receive appropriate referral to their GP if there are special circumstances, secondary infestation or a suspected infestation by roundworms.
