Simian AIDS--evidence for a retroviral etiology.

This paper reviews the major features of a simian model of acquired immunodeficiency ('SAIDS'), SAIDS occurs endemically in colonies of macaque monkeys in the United States and resembles AIDS in humans in overall clinical manifestations, pathology, and immune deficiency. An infectious type D retrovirus, related to but distinct from the Mason-Pfizer monkey virus, has been identified as the primary cause of SAIDS. The relevance of these findings for human AIDS is discussed.

Total parenteral nutrition in mice bearing a metastatic carcinoma: tumor growth, metastasis and immunologic parameters.

The role of dietary manipulation of tumor growth, metastasis and immunologic parameters was studied in mice bearing Lewis lung carcinoma. Fourteen days following subcutaneous tumor implant, groups with tumor and their non-tumor bearing counterparts were assigned to one of the following feeding protocols: total parenteral nutrition (TPN), per oral (PO) intake of the parenteral diet, an oral casein diet (CAS), or electrolyte infusion plus the casein diet (ELECT). Intakes of energy and nitrogen were similar among all groups. Mice were killed 12 days later and peritoneal macrophages were tested for phagocytic activity. Tumor growth and metastasis were decreased from both infusion regimens with minimal loss of body weight as compared with casein fed mice. PO mice also showed lower tumor weight but metastasis was as great as in the casein group. Non-tumor-bearing infused mice showed depressed thymic weight, but thymic weight was not further reduced in tumor-bearing infused mice. PO feeding afforded no such protection in the presence of the carcinoma. Splenomegaly was observed in tumor-bearing mice on all regimens, but mice maintained on the parenteral diet demonstrated the largest proportion of macrophages containing nuclear debris. Analysis of free macrophages indicated no effect of diet regimen on non-immune phagocytic activity in both tumor-free and tumor-bearing mice. Possible alteration of splenic macrophage intracellular digestive capacity or phagocytic activity was suggested as a result of TPN.

Does A.I.D. still spell relief?

The U.S. Agency for International Development has helped foreign governments lower infant mortality rates and extend life expectancy through a combination of disease prevention and medical treatment. But problems at home include allegations of fraud and abuse at the agency's highest levels. A.I.D.'s efforts abroad are complicated by the government's restrictive anti-abortion policy.

Ultrastructure of parathyroid adenomas.

The ultrastructure of 12 cases of parathyroid adenomas is analyzed in the light of recent discoveries of biochemical functions of the parathyroids. Variants of parathyroid chief cells forming the adenomas are illustrated and cytologic details are explored. The correlation of cytoplasmic structures with hormone synthesis, transfer, secretion and intracellular lysosomal degradation is reviewed. A hormone secretory cycle in parathyroid adenomas is not observed. Current knowledge of parathyroid biochemistry does support modulation of hormone production and degradation by parathyroid chief cells rather than a cyclic secretory activity. Unusual structures and alterations of the normal organelles found in parathyroid adenomas are described and illustrated. Contrary to detailed knowledge of hormone synthesis, little is known about other metabolic and structural alterations in these adenomas. The reasons for massive accumulation of lipid, glycogen and mitochondria remain to be explored. As yet, neither ultrastructural investigation nor better understanding of biochemical processes of hormone production have led to recognition of etiologic factors inducing parathyroid adenomas.
