From 1981 to 1984 a randomized clinical trial was conducted to evaluate the role of doxorubicin in low grade malignancy non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL). One hundred and thirteen patients were treated by an induction regimen including cyclophosphamide 400 mg/m2 day 1 and 8, vincristine 1.4 mg/m2 day 1 and 8, procarbazine 80 mg/m2 day 1 to 14, prednisone 60 mg/m2 day 1 to 5 (PCOP regimen) randomly associated to doxorubicin: 20 mg/m2 day 1 and 8 (PACOP regimen). Maintenance therapy consisted of 12 monthly courses of chlorambucil 10 mg/m2 for 5 days or association of cyclophosphamide 300 mg/m2 for 3 days, vincristine 1.4 mg/m2 day 1 and prednisone 60 mg/m2 for 5 days. Complete response (CR) was obtained in 51 patients (45 per cent), in 30 patients after induction regimen and in 21 patients after maintenance therapy, without difference according to regimens. Bone marrow involvement (p = 0.02) and number of involved nodal sites (p = 0.001) were found to influence probability of achieving CR. The median time to progression was estimated to 39 months without difference between regimens. Median overall survival is not reached with a median follow-up of 53 months. Multivariate regression analysis permits observation of negative influence on survival of three parameters: initial bone marrow involvement, age over 50 years and incomplete response to treatment. The initial adjunction of doxorubicin did not seem to influence the appearance of histologic progression.
The aim of this study was to further characterize the gastric longitudinal motility and its relationship between the peristaltic velocity and contractility. Twelve healthy volunteers (six made sport S and six were sedentary NS; moy +/- DS; 24 +/- 2.4 years; 172 +/- 3.9 cm; 65.8 +/- 3.4 kg; n = 12) were involved and ingested 5 hours after a standard meal, 250 ml of barium sulfate suspension. A serial of 15 fluoroscopic plates (size 10 x 10 cm) was taken in 30 seconds. For each subject, the longitudinal variation delta L (cm) of gastric shape, the mean velocity V (mm/s) of gastric peristalsis and the intensity AM (p 100) of contractile wave were measured with a digitalized table connected to a computer. Compared to NS group, the S group showed significative enhanced values of the dynamic parameters (delta L: 2.9 +/- 0.4 vs 1.8 +/- 0.2 cm; V: 2.8 +/- 0.2 vs 2.3 +/- 0.2 mm/s; AM: 55.8 +/- 5.3 vs 48.3 +/- 2.8 p 100; moy +/- DS). Faster rhythms were observed in the diagram of longitudinal motility, with or without the well known gastric frequency 3 c/min. This study allows to point out longitudinal changes of the gastric shape and shows a pattern of significant augmented gastric motility. In fact, it is necessary to consider the stomach in a biomechanical system with the diaphragm and the abdominal wall. This system influenced by exercise might be studied intensively with our dynamic parameters associated with respiratory and abdominal data.
The chewing abnormalities are frequently evoked during odontological and medical examinations. Unfortunately, few means of investigation are available to appreciate the functional disorders. The aim of this paper was to assess masticatory parameters from observation and audiosignals of mastication with a simple analysis of records. In a first time, sixty five students (mean age = 20) applied the sugar test for the salivary capacity (dissolution time = 2 to 3 minutes). Then the chewing movements were analysed with three types (I, II, III) of salt or sweet cookies. The total duration of activity was 29.8 and 28.2 seconds respectively for the tests I and II, only 18.2 seconds for the test III. The number of cycles were 32.5, 28.1 and 19.2 mastications for respectively I, II and III tests. The later type (III) had a softer consistency than the formers. The duration Dc of masticatory cycles was constant for the same type of aliment. The values were between 0.70 for the test II and 0.90 second for the I and II ones. Signal analysis showed an important and rapid decrease of amplitude AS with an exponential-like pattern. The time constant appeared in relation with the softness. Thus, our method allows to characterize the pattern of mastication and could be used for appreciation of degrees in salivary and/or cranio-mandibular functional abnormalities.
This is a brief review on current progresses which appeared recently on the isolation of a putative human oncornavirus from human leukemic cells. There are strong arguments in favor of the existence of such an oncornavirus, both indirect (existence of viral nucleotide sequences and viral proteins in human leukemic cells), and direct (isolation of a Type-C virus from in vitro cultures of human leukemic cells).

Dynamic studies of anti-neoplasic agents provide a mathematical expression of various biological steps. High specific technics of dosage make possible the measurements of the drugs and their metabolites. Pharmacokinetics provides a new approach to three fundamental aspects in oncology: drug toxicity, relationship between drug schedule and response in each individual, drug resistance to anticancer drugs. Rational therapeutic approaches are made possible, as it was shown by the use of high dose of methotrexate.
