[Arterial hypertension in Thio (New Caledonia)].

The high blood pressure is one of the main cardiovascular risk factors in New Caledonia as it is every where. A study carried out in THIO from August 1985 to August 1988 displayed a frequency and a seriousness not frequent (17.8 p.c. of hypertensives in the population over 30 years of age by applying strict criteria), noticeably in the Melanesian ethnic group and mainly in the women. Such a result ought to instigate complementary epidemiological surveys, but also to urge on an active policy of screening, prevention and treatment.

Effects of six beta-blockers on the isolated guinea-pig trachea.

The effects of six beta-blocking agents (propranolol, metoprolol, atenolol, pindolol, medroxalol and labetalol) selected on the basis of their intrinsic sympathomimetic properties, membrane-stabilizing activities and selectivity for beta 1-adrenoceptors were investigated on the isolated guinea-pig trachea. Tracheal spirals were either allowed to remain under resting tension or were precontracted with histamine 2 X 10(-6) M or 2 X 10(-5) M. Pindolol, medroxalol and labetalol exerted a moderate relaxant effect on tracheal muscle. This effect was inhibited by propranolol, but not significantly modified by indomethacin. Propranolol and metoprolol exerted a moderate contracturant effect on the preparations. The effect was inhibited by indomethacin but not by FPL 55712. Atenolol had no effect on tracheal muscle. This in vitro study provided data concerning two properties of beta-blockers--intrinsic sympathomimetic and membrane-stabilizing activities--which are involved in the bronchomotor response to these drugs in vivo.

Possible interaction between HLA and Ig light chain markers in susceptibility to uveitis.

We detected and analysed the Gm and Km allotype markers of Ig in 57 patients affected by uveitis, an ocular inflammation with multifactorial etiology. The aim of the present study has been to investigate the possibility that different immunogenetic factors predispose to the various forms of the disease. We found a statistically significant alteration of Km(1) allele frequency (relative risk = 2.65). That seems to predispose to anterior uveitis, especially when associated with a blank at HLA-A locus (RR = 7.83) but predispose to the posterior form when in combination with HLA-B38 (RR = 19.24). Moreover, a high frequency of Km(1)/A blank phenotypic association was noticed in uveitis with infectious aetiology (RR rising to 10.44). The Km(1) genotype may itself predispose to uveitis and its combination with different HLA alleles could enhance the susceptibility to one particular form rather than to another.
