[Results of 79 hepatic biopsies in untreated bacillary pleurs pulmonary tuberculosis patients].

The authors report 79 needle biopsies of the liver, using a Menghini needle, carried out as routine in untreated cases of pulmonary tuberculosis with positive sputum. Apart from the histological study, the authors carried out, in 30 cases, a bacteriological study of the liver fragment. The bacteriological and histological results are reported here in detail, then compared with those in the world literature. No significant correlation was found between the histological type of the suggestive hepatic lesions, e.g. follicular appearances or appearances of nodular küpferian hyperplasia and the radioclinical variety of pulmonary tuberculosis, e.g. parenchymatous, pleural or miliary. The authors emphasize the significance of each type of pathological lesion encountered, in particular, the appearance of nodular küpferian hyperplasia or intralobular, lymphohistiocytic islets, which seem to them remarkable by their relative frequency and their chararacter fairly suggestive of tuberculosis. In spite of the low number of pathological appearances obtained in these liver biopsies, the present study nevertheless permitted a few interesting conclusions on the blood spread of the tubercle bacillus and the significance of changes in the Küpfer system during common pulmonary tuberculosis.

Asbestos fibers in wines: relation to filtration process.

Asbestos fibers were counted by using the transmission electron microscope in 42 wines from France and abroad. Fifteen samples were found to be significantly positive for chrysotile asbestos. Concentrations were in the range of 2--64 X 10(6) fibers per liter. Technical investigations showed that the abestos content of the wines was related to the process by which they were filtered. On the other hand, we found that abandoning the use of asbestos for filtering wines would not alter the wine from the enological point of view.

[Angiofollicular lymphoid hyperplasia (Castelman's tumor) in the mediastinum. Apropos of 2 cases].

The authors report two new cases of angiofollicular hyperplasia of the mediastinum (Castelman's tumour). The only clinical peculiarity was a rapid increase in volume. The authors then review about 200 published cases. Emphasising the existence of 3 different histological types (plasma cell form, vascular hyaline form and intermediate form) and on the association in certain cases of hematological disorders such as anemia and hypergamma globulinemia. The significance of this lesion is discussed. An inflammatory theory with reactional hyperplasia of the beta-lymphocytes is proposed. It was supported by a direct immunofluorescent study of two cases (first study of this type carried out on such lesions) which showed polyclonal plasma cell hyperplasia predominating on the IgG.
