C cell adenoma of the human thyroid gland.

A case of C cell thyroid adenoma in a 47-year-old female patient is described. The nodule showed progression over 34 years. The adenoma cells showed histochemical and ultrastructural properties characteristic for C cells. Histologic examination revealed no atypical features of nodule cells nor infiltration of capsule by neoplastic cells. In the period of 8 years following the excision there was neither recurrence nor metastases.

Electron microscopic and ultracytochemical investigations of thyroid C cells in primary hyperparathyroidism.

The subject of study were C Cells of the human thyroid in course of primary hyperparathyroidism caused by the presence of a single adenoma. C cells were estimated by routine electron microscopic technique and by cytochemical cholinesterase (ChE) reaction according to Iwayama in electron microscopic technique. The presence of single C cells and of a small agglomeration of these cells, parafollicularily localized was found in the thyroid gland. An electron dense reaction product was noticed on membraneous structures of C cells of the thyroid.

Ethanol toxic effect on the newborn rat liver.--Histochemical and electronmicroscopical investigations.

The object of the study was the liver of newborn rats. Specimens were taken from the 2nd to the 8th hour after birth. Tissue material was obtained from control animals and the newborns whose mothers had been ethanol fed throughout gestation period. 40% ethanol was administered in doses of 8.0 g/kg weight, by gastric tube. In the newborn liver ethanol ingestion had led to significant accumulation of lipids, a strong acid phosphatase reaction and to a drop in succinic dehydrogenase activity. Histochemically, the intensity of alcohol dehydrogenase activity did not show any difference when the ethanol treated newborn liver was compared with controls. Ultrastructurally, the changes in the liver cells were expressed by a disappearance of the rough endoplasmic reticulum elements. Mitochondria were often swollen and distorted.

Combined action of pyrazole and ethanol on a rat liver: histochemical and ultrastructural study.

The effect on a rat liver of combined administration of pyrazole and ethanol was studied histochemically and by electron microscopy. The study revealed strong hepatotoxic action of pyrazole combined with ethanol. Feeding with ethanol alone induces slight alterations in the liver, pyrazole alone affects the liver but slightly, whereas a combined administration of pyrazole and ethanol both by light and electron microscopy examination revealed a strong toxic action leading to severe damage of the liver cells including necrosis.

Histochemical investigation of aldosterone-secreting cells adenoma of the adrenal cortex.

Two cases of adenomas of adrenal cortex were examined. Both cases presented clinical symptoms of autonomic hyperaldosteronism. Histologically one adenoma had a benign structure, the other a malignant one. An ultrastructural and cytochemical assay of the benign form suggests that it is composed of so called "hybrid cells". Histochemically the cells of both adenomas were characterized by a 3-beta hydroxysteroid and succinic dehydrogenase reaction, the presence of MAO and nonspecific esterases and in some single cells 17-beta hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase.

Histochemical features of C-cell thyroid carcinoma.

Six cases of C-cell carcinoma of thyroid gland were studied applying histologic and histochemical methods as well as electron microscopy technique. A histologic feature of the carcinoma pattern was the diversity of pictures. Amyloid was commonly found in the carcinoma stroma. In some cells glycogen was present. Histochemically the carcinoma cells were marked by a strong activity of oxidative enzymes (GDH, SDH, LDH and MAO) as well as hydrolitic one (G-6-P and non specific enterases). Serotonin was found in two cases. An ultrastructural feature of carcinoma cells was the presence of cytoplasmic electron-dense, specific "endocrine type" secretory granules.

Primary C-cell hyperplasia within a nodule of thyroid isthmus.

The electron microscopy method was used to study one case of primary C-cell hyperplasia in 'hot' thyroid nodule of isthmus. Hyperplasia of the light form of C cells was found within nodule tissue. It suggests that C-cell hyperplasia within the nodule as well as in normal thyroid tissue plays a role preceding C-cell carcinoma.

Thyroid C-cells in normal and goitrous gland: a histochemical study.

16 cases of goiter were examined for C-cells and 4 cases with normal thyroid gland. C-cells identification was based on masked metachromasia. There was stated both in toxic, atoxic goitrous tissue two forms of C-cells. The first characterized by positive metachromatic reaction and weak argyrophinty, the second type of C-cells were orthochromatic and argyrophilic. Metachromatic C-cells characterized as a rule by high alpha glycero phosphate menadione reductase as well succinic dehydrogenase and cytochrome oxidase.
