A systemic availability study comparing an investigational buffered tablet formulation of oxyphenbutazone and a commercially available product, the efficacy of which has been well established by usage, is reported. The experiment was designed to dissociate formulation factors from all other sources of variation including differences between subjects, sexes, sequences of administration, experimental periods, as well as sex by sequence, sex by period, and sex by formulation interactions. Systemic availability was assessed by conventional pharmacokinetic techniques. Results show that buffering of a tablet formulation consistently increased the rate and degree of absorption. Although the relative magnitude of bioavailability indicators is slightly different according to the method of calculation, the estimates are always higher with the buffered formulation. No statistical difference was observed for plasma concentration-time profiles between sexes. The wide range of observed concentrations over the time interval of this study confirms other reports of individual variations in handling oxyphenbutazone. The differences noted between the two formulations may be attributed to faster dissolution rate characteristics and better dispersion of oxyphenbutazone. Some aspects of the clinical relevance of this situation are discussed briefly.

In the diagnostic ultrasound community, the echographic B-scan texture is an important area of investigation since it can be analyzed to characterize the histologic state of internal tissues. In the present paper, a minicomputer based system was used to digitize B-mode images and to develop a method to measure their textural information. This method is based on the concept of local information content of spatial image proposed by Lowitz (1983, 1984). It first measures the local gray-level histogram in a small square window centered on each picture element (pixel) of a digitized B-mode image. The information derived from the local histograms is then used to characterize the tissues, to partition the B-mode image into homogeneous zones of texture, to estimate to what extent a tissue is different from another, to delimit the contours of a tissue and to measure its surface. The method is illustrated on the thyroid gland but it can be applied to the study of other organs.

OBJECTIVES: To create a follow-up protocol for pregnant patients with Marfan syndrome. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the charts of patients who delivered in the Jeanne de Flandre University Hospital between June 1996 and June 1999. Four pregnant patients with Marfan syndrome were identified. RESULTS: Three of these patients had Bentall procedure. One of them had vaginal delivery and the two others underwent cesarean section. One of these two patients developed aortic valve thrombus at 14 weeks of amenorrhea. The fourth patient did not have surgery and had two vaginal deliveries. DISCUSSION: According to our results and after reviewing literature pregnant patients with Marfan syndrome were divided into two groups. The 1st group was comprised of patients who underwent Bentall procedure. The 2nd one was comprised of patients who did not undergo any surgical procedure. The possibility of vaginal delivery for patients who underwent Bentall procedure (one case) and the interest of Propanolol and anticoagulant treatment are emphasized. CONCLUSION: The multivariant approach of pregnant patients with Marfan syndrome is stressed out with special reference to the potential complications of this syndrome such as aortic dissection and to the problems related to the anticoagulant treatment.
