Mechanisms of antibody diversity: multiple genes encode structurally related mouse kappa variable regions.

The complete amino acid sequences of the variable regions of three mouse Vkappa-21 kappa chains (A22, T111, and CB101) and one partial sequence (B32) have been determined and are compared to four previously reported Vkappa-21 variable regions. These eight kappa variable region sequences have, with the exception of an amide difference at residue 1, identical amino-terminal 23-residue sequences, all are of the same length, and all have extensive amino acid sequence homology throughout the variable region. When these eight variable regions are grouped by sequence homology, five different groups (Vkappa-21A, B, C, D, and E) are present whose members share common sets of amino acids within a group. Three groups of similar homology each contains at least two members (M63 and AB22 in Vkappa-21B; M321 and T124 in Vkappa-21C; and M70 and B32 in Vkappa-21A). The repetition of these five characteristic subgroup sequences in this relatively small sample indicates that these subgroups are isotypes which are controlled by separate germline genes. It is unlikely that these sequences could have been randomly somatically generated in different animals from a single germ-line gene (parallel mutation). Although a limited number of comparisons are available, the sequence differences within the Vkappa-21A, B, and C isotypes are limited to complementarity-determining regions and may have resulted from somatic mutations. The kappa chains comprising the Vkappa-21 isotypes offer a unique opportunity to compare the genetic interpretations of the primary amino acid sequence data with the nucleic acid hybridization data.

Telemetric measurements of strain in the metacarpus of the horse: a pilot study.

The advances made by the use of a telemetric system in the study of bone strain in a free-moving horse are reported. A rosette strain gauge was bonded to the craniomedial aspect of the metacarpus of the horse. Attachment of a miniature FM transmitter to lead wires facilitated telemetric transmission of of resistance changes which corresponded to limb movement. During 3 different gaits, the trace pattern remained similar, although frequency and amplitude varied. The tracings were similar to those reported in other species in which nontelemetric transmission was used.

Hang gliding injuries.

Two fatal and 42 non-fatal hang gliding accidents are reported. The commonest cause was stalling the craft, either owing to adverse winds or to pilot inexperience. The most frequent injuries were fractures of the wrist, humerus and spine. Inexperienced pilots were involved in most of the accidents, so that the training and supervision of novices is of fundamental importance if the accident rate of the sport is to be reduced.

Hang gliding injuries. A preliminary report.

Six cases of injury associated with hang gliding are reported. The history and technique of the sport are briefly described. Fractures of the spine and limbs are the commonest injuries encountered in this high risk activity and many of them could be avoided or reduced in severity by simple safety precautions.

A factor-analytic examination of sexual behaviors and attitudes and marihuana usage.

A questionnaire that pertains to sexual attitudes and behaviors, family relationships, and marihuana usage was administered to 358 undergraduates at Wichita State University. A factor analysis performed upon the results yielded 12 factors related to sexual behavior: (1) Liberal vs. Conservative Attitudes; (2) Age-Experience; (3) Symbolic Sexual Preoccupation; (4) Romantic Love vs. Cynicism; (5) Experience-linked Drug Effects; (6) Affectual Dependence; (7) Mature Satisfaction; (8) Conservative vs. Liberal Sexual Practices; (9) High vs. Low Sexual Activity; (10) Sexual Revolution; (11) Sex; (12) Traditional vs. Cynical Love Roles.
