[Severe aortic incompetence from dysplasia of the valve. A report on 19 cases of this real but often unrecognized disorder (author's transl)].

A total of 19 patients were found to have severe aortic incompetence from dysplasia of the valve (thin, spread-out valves having a tendency towards eversion). This type of valve abnormality is often unrecognized but is found in 13,6% of cases of severe aortic incompetence. The relationship between this condition and Marfan's syndrome or its aberrant forms are discussed, as well as its frequency when unrelated to this disease. The dysplasias can be isolated phenomena or associated with pathological conditions of the ascending aorta. The results of this review suggest that some of these dysplasias might be rheumatic in origin.

[Serodiagnosis of 2,438 cases of toxoplasmosis by immunofluorescence at the Pasteur Institute of Algeria. Epidemiological and clinical corollaries].

2 438 sera from patients suspected of having toxoplasmosis, were tested by indirect immunofluorescence at the Pasteur Institute of Algeria between 1969 and 1973. 53,2% of the sera tested were shown to be positive. Although geographically limited, this investigation reveals the frequency of toxoplasmic infection in the Algiers region with a predominance of the polyadenopathic benign form. Moreover, the causative role of toxoplasmosis in repeated abortions is confirmed.

Leishmania infantum and L. major in Algeria.

Since 1980, the development of leishmaniasis in Algeria has been marked by a considerable increase in the number of cases of both visceral leishmaniasis (1121 cases recorded) and cutaneous leishmaniasis (more than 2000 cases per year). New Leishmania infantum and L. major foci have appeared in the north and south of the country. During this period, 100 strains of Leishmania isolated from humans, other mammals and sandflies have been identified. The presence of L. major MON-25 in Psammomys obesus and Phlebotomus papatasi had identified these species as the main reservoir and vector, respectively, of zoonotic cutaneous leishmaniasis. Similarly, the presence of L. infantum MON-1 in Ph. perniciosus and dogs has implicated them as the vector and reservoir of visceral leishmaniasis. The isolation of the dermotropic zymodeme MON-24 of L. infantum from Ph. perfiliewi suggested that it was one of the main vectors of cutaneous leishmaniasis in the north of the country; the reservoir has not been identified. In addition, other zymodemes of Leishmania have been identified in visceral leishmaniasis patients, frequently associated with human immunodeficiency virus (MON-24, MON-33, MON-34 and MON-78), in patients with cutaneous leishmaniasis (MON-80), and in dogs with leishmaniasis (MON-34 and MON-77).

[Management of a suspect bite].

Ignorance of the indications or unsuitable treatment are the most common causes of mistakes in the vaccinal or serovaccinal treatment of rabies. The physiological, clinical and epidemiological bases are brought to mind and a simple management scheme is suggested taking into account the W.H.O. recommendations.

[Epidemiology of rabies in Algeria].

An epidemiological study on rabies in Algeria has been carried out on data provided by the "Institut national de Santé publique" and the "Institut Pasteur d'Algérie". It showed that no region is unhurt. The animal reservoir is of the domestic type, essentially the dog. In 40% of cases, bites are due to stray dogs.

[Description of 173 cases of cutaneous leishmaniasis].

The authors present 173 cases of cutaneous Leishmaniasis observed in the Biskra area. Sidi Okba is the biggest focus of this disease which mainly affects children from 1 to 5 years. Lesions are dry and often multiple (2 or 3). The authors have observed that 73% of girls are affected on the face and point out the aesthetic damage caused by the oriental sore.

[Evaluation of intestinal parasitoses found in Algerians (1971-1975)].

A high incidence of intestinal parasitism was found in and around Algiers: out of 4,334 cases tested, 1,387 (about one third) were positive. The authors consider this to be a conservative estimate. The figures quoted will be revised, if necessary, on the results of a systematic survey at present under way.

[A new focus of urinary bilharziasis in Algeria].

In 1976, 161 new cases of urinary bilharziasis were discovered in El Harrach, which until then had been free of the disease. The authors point out the dangers of the disease spreading in view of the presence of Bulinus in Algeria outside the normal foci of bilharziasis.
