[The influence of acupuncture analgesia on the sensation and feeling of pain and the autonomic state of the organism (author's transl)].

This study reports the effect of acupuncture on the sensation of pain, feeling of pain and on the autonomic state of the organism. In order to elucidate the problem physiological and psychological parameters were employed. It was observed that the insertion of the needles with electrical stimulation raised the pain threshold. The rise occurred whether a classical acupuncture point or a placebo acupuncture point was used. When the pain was assessed subjectively, it was found that the needling of a classical acupuncture point favourably influenced the experience of pain. Furthermore, persons in whom acupuncture worked well were characterized by a low subjective and objective pain threshold, a slow pulse rate and a high anxiety score.

Serum alpha-1-acid glycoprotein as an index of dissemination in breast cancer.

Assay of the serum alpha-1-acid glycoprotein (SAGP) produced by the liver in response to many disease states is shown to reflect prognosis and monitor progress in patients with early, recurrent and disseminated breast cancer. Eighteen of 26 patients with localized breast cancer and positive bone scans had elevated SAGP when first seen, but within 5 months of treatment 5 further patients with positive bone scans developed an elevated SAGP. Furthermore, an initially abnormal SAGP level became normal within 5 months in 5 of 6 patients with negative bone scans. While elevated SAGP in breast cancer correlates with positive bone scans, a series of normal values may indicate patients without early haematogenous dissemination of their disease.

The aged and diachronic solidarity in modern society.

Theory in social gerontology has mostly taken the individual as the main unit of inference. But one may learn more about the conditions of older people through a focus on diachronic solidarity conceptualized as a societal requisite. For this suggests that industrial societies have varying needs for older people. Depending on the stability of their institutions, identification with them, and presumptions about their stability, older people may or may not be accorded an important role in the symbolization of societal continuity. Limited evidence on the relation between income stratification by age and regime stability supports this hypothesis.

Heart rate and myocardial substrate preference during normal and hypoxic perfusion of the heart in vivo.

Selective utilization of carbohydrates and FFA by the heart was studied on the open-chest dog preparation. The heart was paced at frequencies from 120-240/min, and arterial and coronary venous blood samples were taken at these frequencies both during normal ventilation and hypoxia (arterial PO2 similar to 55 mmHg). The concentrations of glucose, lactate, pyruvate, and FFA were determined, and substrate utilization was calculated from these values and coronary blood flow. It was found that increased heart rate, particularly during hypoxia, increased utilization of both glucose and FFA. However, the relative amount of the energy produced from glucose utilization was minimal during hypoxia and most glucose underwent glycolysis only. Thus, whereas in control conditions of the relation between carbohydrate and FFA was about 60% to 40% during hyposia and high frequency the relation was reversed and almost 90% of all energy produced was supplied by FFA.
