Distortion of maximal elevator activity by unilateral premature tooth contact.

In four subjects the electrical activity in the anterior and posterior temporal and masseter muscles during maximal bite was recorded bilaterally with and without premature unilateral contact. Muscle activity was measured as the average level and the peak of the mean voltage with layers of strips of 0.05, 0.10, 0.15 and 2.0 mm, placed between first molars either on the left or the right side, and compared with the level of activity with undistrubed occlusion. Unilateral premature contact caused a significant asymmetry of action in all muscles under study with stronger activity ipsilaterally. With increasing thickness of the overlay the mean voltage decreased in parallel on both sides. We suggest that the asymmetry was caused by larger spindle afferent activity on the ipsilateral as compared to the contralateral side, and that the all-over decrease of muscle activity was due to a gradual reduction of activity from periodontal pressoreceptors.

Effect of acupuncture on the pain perception thresholds of human teeth.

The effect of acumpuncture on the pain perception threshold of maxillary incisors and canines as determined by a Bofors Pulp Tester was studied in 33 dental students 19-30 years of age. Test teeth were cleaned with pumice and 10% alcohol, air-dried, and insulated at the approximal surfaces with strips of rubber dam. Based on a comparison of bipolar and monopolar stimulation the latter method was chosen, with the cathode placed on the incisal third of the facial surface, the indifferent electrode in the subject's hand. In separate groups of subjects thresholds were assessed four times at intervals of 15 min without acupuncture (1), with acupuncture performed manually (2) and electrically (3), and during electrical stimulation with surface electrodes over acupuncture points (4). On separate days acupuncture and surface stimulation was applied unilaterally at the points S2 (cheek), Li4 (hand), or S44 (foot). Compared with control threshold (8.44 muA) acupuncture was accompanied by a small increase, most pronounced after 45 min (1.51 muA, P less than 0.0005). However, the hypalgesia observed was insufficient to justify acupuncture as a means of pain control in conservative dentistry.

Transcriptional regulation of the bovine CYP17 gene: two nuclear orphan receptors determine activity of cAMP-responsive sequence 2.

The CYP17 gene contains in its promoter region at least two cis-acting elements (cAMP-responsive sequence 1 and 2, CRS1 and CRS2) that are necessary for adrenocorticotropin (ACTH) induced transcription. The CRS2 element contains a 6 bp repeat similar to binding sites for members of the nuclear hormone receptor superfamily of transcription factors. We present data that establish the repeated part of CRS2 (repCRS2) as a target of two nuclear orphan receptors; steroidogenic factor 1 (SF-1) and chicken ovalbumin upstream promoter transcription factor (COUP-TF). The repCRS2 element was found to form COUP-TF-related complexes with nuclear extracts from all cell lines tested, whereas SF-1-related complexes were only formed with extracts from steroidogenic Y1 cells. Transfection studies of steroidogenic cells demonstrated that SF-1 acts as an activator of repCRS2-dependent transcription of reporter genes.
