[Cogan's syndrome. Apropos of a case].

The syndrome of Cogan associate a non syphilic interstitial keratitis and a bilateral deafness of perception. Referring to a case, the authors review the clinical pathogenic and the different immunological exams.

Adult

[Ameloblastoma of nasosinusal site. Apropos of 2 cases].

The authors have reported two exceptional cases of naso-sinusal ameloblastoma in a child and an old man. They pass in review the pathogeny and the difficulties of the diagnosis. The treatment is exclusively chirurgical.

Adolescent

[Malignant external otitis in diabetics].

The authors refer to 10 cases of malignant external otitis in diabetic patients. A group of five patients had a chirurgical treatment associated to an antibiotic therapy. The five other patients were treated medically. The prognosis of this disease is severe.

Aged

[Cervicofacial actinomycosis. Apropos of 5 cases].

Concerning five observations of cervico-facial actinomycosis in the O.R.L. ward of Charles-Nicolle hospital, authors report sings, diagnosis and bacteriology. The cure consists in the extracting of the teeth concerned, the removal of the necrosed tissues and an antibiotherapic treatment based on ligh doses of penicillin relaying with cyclins.

Actinomycosis, Cervicofacial

[Cervicofacial hydatidosis. Apropos of 7 cases].

The authors report seven cases of hydatidosis located in neck region. They reviewed components of positive diagnosis, particularly serological one. Surgery is the treatment in all cases, and preventive treatment is the best one before apparition of cysts.

Adolescent

[Lymph node tuberculosis].

Ganglionic tuberculosis with a cervicofacial location is still frequent in Tunisia. The main problem posed is bacteriological. Over the last nine years, we have treated 110 patients. There is a clear male predominance. The preferential location is the jugulocarotid and upper spinal chain. The notions of contamination and a secondary location, particularly in the lungs, are rarely encountered. Extended cellulolymphadenectomy is the basis of surgical treatment, backed up by polychemotherapy over a period of 6 months.

Adolescent

[Pharyngeal stenosis in a case of Behçet's disease].

A case of pharyngeal stenosis in Behcet's disease is reported. A parallelism is done with other systemic disorders such as lupus erythematosus and Wegener's disease. Vasculitis and localised myositis are incriminated in the mecanism of the pharyngeal stenosis.

Adolescent

Effect of electrical stimulation of the thoracic spinal cord on the function of the bladder in multiple sclerosis.

We treated 40 patients who had multiple sclerosis and bladder symptoms with thoracic spinal cord electrical stimulation. Bladder and sphincter dysfunction was evaluated by cystometry and electromyography. Subjective improvement was noted in 77.5 per cent of the patients and documented improvement was found on cystometry and electromyography in 42.5 per cent. By electrical stimulation of the spinal cord we have demonstrated varying degrees of restoration of voluntary and reflex control of the bladder and sphincter.

Biocompatibility test procedures for materials evaluation in vitro. II. Objective methods of toxicity assessment.

Methods of assessing the biocompatibility of materials for use in medical devices were evaluated. Ten materials were tested using quantitative, objectively graded in vitro biochemical and functional assays employing four cell lines (CCL 1, 74, 76, and 131) used in previous work and five primary cell types (human lymphocytes, polymorphonuclear leukocytes, and mixed leukocytes, mouse macrophages, and mouse embryo). The biochemical methods (DNA synthesis, protein synthesis, and ATP activity) demonstrated good agreement in toxicity ranking of the materials, regardless of which cell culture was used and, also, the cell cultures responded similarly for each method. Methods that measured functional characteristics of cells (adhesion and phagocytosis) were highly sensitive but had low toxicity ranking agreement and reproducibility. Assays (defined as method and cell culture combinations) using cell lines were more reproducible than assays using primary cell types. Significant differences in sensitivity were noted among the assay systems for particular material types. The in vitro assays were more sensitive to differences in material composition than was a 90-day assay by subcutaneous implantation in rats.
