Skull fracture as a risk factor of intracranial complications in minor head injuries: a prospective CT study in a series of 98 adult patients.

Ninety eight patients admitted to hospital after a minor head injury were studied by CT. Forty seven patients had a skull fracture and 51 did not. Significantly more intracranial lesions were found in those with a fracture (16) that those without (3) (p less than 0.01). Nine of the patients with a skull fracture and positive CT were transferred to a neurosurgical department, where six underwent operation. Operation was not required in patients without a skull fracture. Head injured patients with a skull fracture should undergo CT scanning to enable early detection of an intracranial haematoma.

[Current clinical use of radioisotopes in the study of platelet kinetics].

Radioisotopic study of platelet kinetics can provide a preliminary orientation in the diagnosis of thrombocytopenia. A study of the platelet kinetics in thrombocytopenic and normal subjects using the Cr51 isologous platelet labelling technique and subsequent in vivo injection of the labelled platelets was conducted. The results obtained confirm the reliability and usefulness of the technique. The identification of the limitations involved and the recognition of their significance in processing data allows the hematologist and the general practitioner to allow the right amount of room for the study of platelet kinetics in the diagnosis of thrombocytopenia.

Blood Platelet Disorders

[Case contribution on intraoperative cholangiography].

An assessment is made of the systematic application of intraoperative cholangiography in the light of a consecutive series gathered over a period of four years. The importance of employing this technique as a routine measure is clearly demonstrated by the results. If properly performed, it greatly reduces unnecessary choledochotomy, diminishes the incidence of overlooked calculi, and leads to the detection of papillo-oddian diseases.
