Simultaneous determination of carboxyhemoglobin and methemoglobin in victims of carbon monoxide poisoning.

Concentrations of methemoglobin (Met-Hb) and carboxyhemoglobin (HbCO) were simultaneously determined in blood samples from the victims of city gas poisoning, fires, and exhaust fumes poisoning. All the samples contained concentrations of HbCO, although the concentrations for victims of city gas poisoning were significantly higher than those for victims of fires or exhaust fumes poisoning. Only negligible amounts of Met-Hb were detected in the samples from cases of city gas poisoning, while 4.9 to 31.6% of Met-Hb were found in all but one (1.8%) of the samples of the other two cases. Heat denaturation was considered to be the main cause of Met-Hb production in cases of fires, and inhalation of oxides of nitrogen in cases of exhaust fumes poisoning.

A novel stromal cell type in the rat marrow recognizable by its preferential uptake of lanthanum.

A novel stromal cell type is described in the rat bone marrow. It is distinguishable from other stromal cells (macrophages, reticular cells, etc.) by its preferential uptake of the electron dense tracer lanthanum nitrate, which can then serve as a marker for this cell type. In low concentration of lanthanum, this cell type is the only marrow cell that takes up the tracer. Other stromal cells do not take ip up even in high concentration. This novel stromal type is associated with both erythropoietic and granulopoietic areas of the marrow tissue. Its branching cytoplasm is very light in density and contains no characteristic cytoplasmic organelles. Its function is not yet known.

Role of reduced glutathione on platelet functions.

The role of reduced glutathione (GSH) on platelet functions was investigated utilizing thiol oxidizing agent, "diamide". Diamide reacted rapidly with GSH in platelets, but not with protein thiols. Platelets treated with diamide showed inhibition of platelet aggregation induced by ADP, epinephrine and collagen in a concentration dependent manner. Clot retraction was grossly inhibited by diamide. Platelet interaction with polymerizing fibrin was examined by the method of Niewiarowski et al. (1972). There was no interaction obeserved between diamide-treated platelets and polymerizing fibrin. Ultrastructural observation of clots formed in the presence of diamide also showed no direct contact between platelets and fibrin strands. Platelets retained their granular contents, but showed loss of microtubules and dilatation of open canalicular system. Our findings may further support the idea that GSH plays an important role on platelet functions.

[Choroid plexus carcinoma with metastasis to bone (author's transl)].

A very rare case of the choroid plexus carcinoma of the left lateral ventricle with metastasis to bone was reported. A two-month-old baby was suffering from irritability and vomiting. Her vital signs became progressively worse. On admission she showed an increased head circumference and meningeal irritation signs. An emergency tapping of the right lateral ventricle at the anterior fontanel revealed the bloody csf and an opening pressure of over 700 mm of water. All laboratory findings were negative. Cerebral angiograms showed only an internal hydrocephalus. CT scan and conray-ventriculography gave the finding of a tumor at the trigone of the left lateral ventricle. The tumor was removed "en bloc". Histological examination of the tumor revealed a choroid plexus carcinoma, which was considered met the criteria given by Russell and Rubinstein. The postoperative course was very complicated with metastasis to the right tibia, which was verified by needle biopsy. The patient died from a cachexia. This case was the youngest of all reported cases and very unique in the point of which the tumor metastasized to outside of the central neural axis.

Controlled locomotion in the mesencephalic cat: distribution of facilitatory and inhibitory regions within pontine tegmentum.

1. The contribution of postural tonus to controlled locomotion elicited by the stimulation of mesencephalic locomotor region (MLR) was studied in the acute precolicular-postmammillary decerebrate (mesencephalic) cat. 2. A microelectrode was placed in the unilateral MLR and another was placed systematically at 1-mm increments throughout the pons (H--4 to H--1O) at level ranging from P2 to P11 dorsoventrally and mediolaterally from 0 to L or R6. Depending on the general condition of the animal, stimuli through this second electrode were delivered preceding, succeeding, or simultaneous with the MLR stimulation. 3. Stimulation of the ventral part of the caudal tegmental field (P3 to P9, H--6 to H--8) increased extensor tonus of the hindlimbs, as assessed by recording muscle activity. Concomitant stimulation of this region converted MLR-elicited hindlimb stepping to coordinated four-legged locomotion and also elicited locomotion even when stimulation of the MLR alone failed to elicit locomotion. Stimulation of this ventral tegmental region alone at a larger stimulus intensity elicited spastic locomotor movements associated with a substantial increase in extensor tonus. 4. Stimulation of the lateral tegmented field surrounding the pontine locomotor region (PLR) also facilitated MLR effects, but had a relatively weaker facilitatory effect on postural tonus then stimulation of the ventrocaudal tegmental field. PLR stimulation alone was also ineffective when postural tonus was not well maintained. 5 Stimulation of the dorsal part of caudal tegmental field (P3 to P9, H--4 to H--6) in its midline dramatically decreased extensor tonus of the hindlimbs. MLR-elicited controlled locomotion was completely suppressed during concomitant stimulation of this inhibitory region. 6. These results indicated clearly that the degree of existing postural tonus greatly affects MLR-elicited locomotor movements and that an increase in postural tonus and an activation of the spinal stepping generator are not separate phenomenia.
