A simple and accurate determination of iron in blood involving acid digestion in a heating block is described. The digestion requires little attention and permits the handling of large numbers of samples. The diluted digest is used for the colorimetric determination of iron using o-phenanthroline, and the equivalent hemoglobin in blood is calculated. There was a good correlation between the results of the present method and the cyanmethemoglobin method with 21 standard blood samples containing 4.9-26.8 g/dl of hemoglobin.

Attempts were made to detect phenotypes of the enzymes phosphoglucomutase (PGM) and phosphogluconate dehydrogenase (PGD) in human skin and adipose tissues. Both enzymes could be typed using approximately 3 mg wet weight of tissue. Phenotypes could be distinguished after up to 15 days of aging for PGM and ten days of aging for PGD. Analysis of isoenzymes is potentially useful for mediolegal identification of human skin and adipose tissue.
By the intraluminal injection of 3,4-benzo[a]pyrene into human bronchial grafts in nude mice, squamous cell carcinoma was induced in one bronchial graft out of 17 benzo[a]pyrene-treated grafts. As benzo[a]pyrene is one of the most common carcinogens in the human environment, this experimental system should serve as an excellent model system for studying the process of carcinogenesis in the human respiratory tract.
Cefmetazole was investigated on stability to beta-lactamases produced by Bacteroides fragilis and on therapeutic effects in mice infected with B. fragilis. 1. Cefmetazole, like other cephamycins, was found extremely stable to beta-lactamases obtained from B. fragilis. 2. Cefmetazole showed good antimicrobial activities to 50 strains of B. fragilis and extremely high stability to their beta-lactamases. 3. Cefmetazole showed an excellent protecting effect to infections due to beta-lactamase producing B. fragilis. 4. Cefmetazole exhibited an excellent chemotherapeutic effect against polymicrobial infections in mice due to E. coli (beta-lactamase -)and B. fragilis (beta-lactamase +).

A simple spectrophotometric method for determination of carboxyhemoglobin (HbCO) in blood is described. Blood is dissolved in sodium carbonate solution at a dilution near 250-fold. The diluent contains sodium hydrosulfite providing the two-component system HbCO- reduced hemoglobin (HHb). The percentage of HbCO is calculated from absorbance values at 532 and 558 nm measured after the addition of sodium hydroxide, which makes the solution completely clear. Results obtained by the present method are in satisfactory agreement with those by the oxygen electrode method.
Afferent inhibition in several distinct types of cuneate neurons was studied using controlled natural stimuli in 35 lightly anesthetized cats. Mechanoreceptive cuneate neurons were recorded extracellularly with microelectrodes from the middle and caudal divisions of the main nucleus. They were classified into several modality subtypes based on their response to adequate mechanical stimuli. Emphasis was laid on the neurons which had their receptive fields (RFs) in the forepaw. Afferent inhibition was induced by conditioning tactile stimuli in 31 out of 168 neurons (18%) tested. There were particular combinations between the neuron types inhibited and conditioning stimulus modalities. Dynamic stimuli such as high frequency vibration and hair movement by air-jet stimuli applied to areas beyond the excitatory RFs induced inhibition on touch (T), hair (H) and slowly adapting pad (SA) units predominantly in the paw region. In contrast, steady pressure stimulation on the skin adjacent to the excitatory RFs induced inhibition in exclusively slowly adapting neurons receiving afferent inputs from hairy skin such as touch (T), joint (J) and subcutaneous (Deep) units in the paw, elbow and shoulder regions. Most of the inhibitory RFs were organized laterally or eccentrically rather than concentrically around the excitatory RF. Two J units were found to be inhibited by steady pressure applied to the shoulder region of the contralateral forelimb. Functional significance of the intramodality and cross modality inhibition of cuneate neurons is discussed.

In the acute precollicular-postmammillary decerebrate cat, pinna stimulation was found to elicit four-legged locomotion on the treadmill. The adequate stimuli for eliciting locomotion were of the nature of deep pressure with the fingertips. The receptive field of the pinna were distributed along the edge of the scapha. When the existing postural tonus after decerebration were highly exaggerated or depressed, the same stimulation failed to elicit locomotion.

Electron microscopic evidence is presented to indicate that entire megakaryocytes traverse the marrow--blood barrier and enter the circulation. Passage occurs through apertures of 6 micrometer in diameter, located in the parajunctional areas of the marrow sinus endothelium. Serial sectioning indicates that these apertures are transendothelial rather than interendothelial. The cytoplasm of these megakaryocytes form sinuating elongated projections which may release their platelets in the sinus lumen or when reaching the pulmonary circulation. In the extravascular compartments, megakaryocytes are preferentially located in the subendothelial region. In this location they can send numerous organelle-free projections into the lumen. These projections distinguishable from less numerous organelle-containing projections could serve to 'anchor' the cell to the endothelium. They could also serve to 'monitor' the circulation and to receive information as to the requirement of body for platelet formation.
