Mononuclear cell turnover in chronic inflammation: studies on tritiated thymidine-labeled cells in blood, tuberculin traps, and dermal BCG lesions of rabbits.

Rabbits were injected intradermally in multiple sites with BCG. Four days after the BCG injection, they were injected intravenously with a single pulse of tritiated thymidine (3H-TdR) at various times thereafter, the BCG lesions were biopsied and evaluated for 3H-TdR-labeled mononuclear cells (MN). Periodically, Old Tuberculin (OT) was injected intradermally, creating MN traps which were biopsied and evaluated 1 day after their onset. 3H-TdR-labeled cells were also evaluated in samples of blood. During the first 8 days after the 3H-TdR pulse, the labeled MNs represent short-lived cells, i.e., recently dividing monocytes and lymphocytes. During this time, the percentage of labeled MNs in the blood, in the traps, and in the BCG lesions rose and fell together. This result suggests that the majority of the MNs in the BCG lesions had a turnover rate of about a week. By 12 days and afterward, the percentage of MNs labeled by 3H-TdR in the blood was higher than that in the BCG lesions which was in turn higher than that in the traps. At this time the circulating MN population probably contained labeled long-lived lymphocytes that did not enter inflammatory sites (the traps) as readily as the short-lived lymphocytes. The labeled MNs remaining in the BCG lesions probably did not divide and dilute out their 3H-TdR label as readily as those that were trapped from the bone marrow via the blood. The percentage of MNs labeled with 3H-TdR in the traps had decreased to about one-fifteenth of its peak value by 12 days, suggesting that the bone marrow's supply of labeled MNs was depleted at this time, except for the few cells labeled as a result of 3H-TdR reutilization.

Anatomically corrected malposition of the great arteries (S, D, L).

Two autopsy-proved cases are presented of a rare form of congenital heart disease, anatomically corrected malposition (S, D, L). Anatomically corrected malposition means that despite the abnormal relationship between the great arteries, the aorta arises nonetheless above the anatomically left ventricle and the pulmonary artery originates above the anatomically right ventricle. (S, D. L) briefly indicates the segmental set or combination: situs solitus of viscera and atria (S), ventricular D-loop (D), AND L-MALPOSITION OF THE GREAT ARTERIES (L). These are the first cases of anatomically corrected malposition (ACM) in whom the presence of a subaortic muscular conus only has been documented pathologically. This established that ACM can occur with a subaortic conus, as well as with a bilateral conus. From the diagnostic standpoint, the distributions or epicardial courses of the coronary arteries are recommended as a helpful approach to ventricular identification. This diagnostic method has widespread angiocardiographic and surgical applications. Symbolic terminology, exemplified by anatomically corrected malposition (S, D. L) is brief and accurate. This approach may conveniently be applied to many other forms of comples congenital heart disease, and it considerably facilitates computer data processing.

Effect of vitamin A on 2,2-bis-(p-chlorophenyl), 1,1-dichloroethylene concentration in rat liver.

Residual amounts of 2, 2-bis-(p-chlorophyenyl), 1, 1-dicholroethylene (p,p' DDE) and the concentrations of total lipids and triglyceride were studied with respect to the internal organs of rats which had been dosed with p,p' DDE and fed on the diet free from vitamin A or containing excess of vitamin A. Either the absence or excess of vitamin A was found to increase triglyceride content and p,p' DDE storage level in the liver. However, the ratio of p,p' DDE stroage level in the liver to content of liver triglyceride was almost constant independently of the vitamin A treatment. It is suggested that the dose of vitamin A has some influences upon the metabolic processes of liver triglyceride in rats and changes the storage level of P,P'DDE in the organ.

Common atrium associated with anomalous high insertion of the inferior vena cava.

The case is reported of a 38-year-old housewife with a common atrium associated with anomalous high insertion of the inferior vena cava, absence of the coronary sinus, and drainage of a left hepatic vein into the left side of common atrium. Surgical repair was performed successfully. The procedure was closure of a nearly total atrial septal defect with a Dacron patch. Embroyologically, the development failure of the sinu-atrial fold appears to be the basic causal factor.
