[Cryotherapy of recurrent corneal erosions].

In three patients with numerous relapses of corneal erosions cryotherapy in the sense of cryostimulation was performed. Short-term medium intense cryoapplication was used - 1 cryocycle of -80 degrees C for 7 seconds on the whole area of the defect, using an applicator with a working area of 2 mm. On the third day after the procedure in all eyes satisfactory epithelization occurred. On the fifth day after the procedure the eye had recovered. The observation period is 13-17 months - no relapse. Cryotherapy proved the most effective of all hitherto used therapeutic procedures.

[Dacryocystorhinostomy with temporary intubation using a Hatt set].

During the period between June 1987 and March 1988 the authors performed 10 dacryocystorhinostomies with temporary intubation of the new efferent pathways, using a Hatt set. Three patients removed the set themselves during the early postoperative period. The authors evaluate thus seven successful intubations lasting two months. The observation period is six to eighteen months. In six patients the new efferent pathways are patent without signs of epiphora not even when lacrimation is irritated. One patient developed during the postoperative period torpid rhinitis persisting for two months and a block at the junction of the canaliculi. The results even in this small group are encouraging and the authors assume that temporary intubation with a Hatt set, which was very well tolerated by the patients, will enhances the success of this promising operation.

[Histological grading of neuroblastomas. 25 cases].

Histological studies were conducted into 25 cases of neuroblastoma selected from consecutive biopsy material. They were 4 grade I, 5 grade II and 16 grade III tumours, according to the classification of Hughes et al. Two of the grade I neuroblastomas exhibited diffuse growth patterns. The other two were diagnosed as composite types. The histological signs of differentiation and their prognostic value are discussed.

Photochemical instability of 1-nitropyrene, 3-nitrofluoranthene, 1,8-dinitropyrene and their parent polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons.

The environmental contaminants pyrene, 1-nitropyrene, 1,8-dinitropyrene, fluoranthene, and 3-nitrofluoranthene were exposed to light (greater than or equal to 310 nm) either in DMSO, or following coating onto silica. Under all conditions tested the pyrenyl were less stable than the fluoranthenyl compounds. During irradiation in DMSO or on silica, 1-nitropyrene had half-lives of 1.2 and 6 days, while those of 3-nitrofluoranthene were 12.5 and greater than 20 days, respectively. The photodecomposition of 1,8-dinitropyrene resembled that of 1-nitropyrene with half-lives of 0.7 and 5.7 days. A principle photodecomposition product of 1,8-dinitropyrene was identified as 1-nitropyren-8-ol. It was also found that when the nitroarenes were exposed to light, the loss of compound was associated with a concomitant loss of mutagenicity in Salmonella typhimurium strain TA98. The mechanism of nitrated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon decomposition and 1-nitropyren-8-ol formation, and the relevance to the atmospheric disposition of these compounds are discussed.

[Malacoplakia of the prostate].

It is reported on the extremely rare manifestation of a malacoplakia in the prostate gland. In a 67-year-old male patient the clinical diagnosis was adenoma of the prostate gland. Intra-operatively, there was the suspicion to a malignant neoplasia, which allowed only of a partial removal. The histological investigation resulted in a severe granulomatous prostatitis with characteristic cell inclusions. The ultrastructural findings confirmed the diagnosis of malacoplakia. The morphological picture, the pathogenesis and the differential diagnosis are shown.

[Alcoholic liver damage in biopsy material].

Typical alcoholic liver damage was found in 204 cases among 1,000 consecutive liver biopsies. Using the classification of Roschlau, 43.6% of the livers were stage II. Most alcoholic liver disease occurred in men and women in the fifth decade of life. The frequency of alcoholic hepatitis appeared to be greater in the higher stages. To determine the diagnostic value of different histologic changes, the frequency of several alterations was registered.

Analyses of vegetables from the highlands of Papua New Guinea.

Ten vegetable foods of the highlands were analysed for crude protein, amino acids and trypsin inhibitor. Pandanus nut, lima bean, fern, greens, pitpit and choko had good to acceptable crude protein contents and the proteins of fern, pitpit, Rungia klossii and Indian mustard were of good quality. Lima beans had a very high content of trypsin inhibitor and all others had small or zero amounts, including fern, which is used at pig feasts and hence does not contribute to pig bel.

5-Nitroacenaphthene: a newly recognized role for the nitro function in mutagenicity.

The direct-acting mutagenicity of 5-nitroacenaphthene for Salmonella typhimurium is dependent upon the reduction of the nitro function as evidenced by the significant decrease in mutagenicity seen with nitroreductase-deficient Salmonella strains. Addition of microsomal preparations results in a significant increase in mutagenicity and a by-passing of the block in nitroreductase-deficient and arylhydroxylamine esterifying-deficient enzyme strains. The results are taken to indicate that the microsome-induced mutagenicity is due primarily to oxidation of the acenaphthene moiety. The results are consistent with recent studies which indicate that the nitro function exercises a directing effect on ring oxidation.

Apparent absence of recombinogenic activity of nitropyrenes for yeast.

Nitropyrenes have been shown to be potent bacterial and mammalian mutagens. However, they failed to induce any recombinogenic activity in Saccharomyces cerevisiae D4 even at elevated concentrations and following extended periods of exposure. A plausible explanation for this lack of activity is the absence or the lack of activation of the enzyme required for the activation of nitropyrenes in this test system under the experimental (aerobic) conditions employed.

Evidence that nitroarene metabolites form mutagenic adducts with DNA-adenine as well as with DNA-guanine.

Nitropyrenes as well as several other nitroarenes and their metabolites exhibit considerable mutagenicity for Salmonella tester strains (TA102 and TA96) which have adenine-thymine base pairs at the mutational target. This finding is unexpected as previous biochemical studies had shown that arylation at the C8 position of DNA-guanine is the only chemically and biologically significant reaction. This conclusion is supported by the extraordinary mutagenic potency of these chemicals in Salmonella strains with guanine at the mutational site (e.g., TA98). The present results indicate that a minor reaction with DNA-adenine may result in the formation of an unusually potent promutagenic DNA adduct.
