Changes from puberty to adulthood in the concentration, motility and morphology of mouse epididymal spermatozoa.

A systematic study of the concentration, motility and morphology of epididymal spermatozoa was undertaken in mice of the OF1 strain, in order to characterize the changes observed during puberty. The comparative development of these 3 parameters was followed from days 30 to 90. A detailed morphological system of classification was established covering both individual and multiple abnormalities. At puberty, the first spermatozoa to appear were few in number, showed poor motility and were extremely atypical. Subsequently, the number of atypically-shaped spermatozoa diminished, and their concentration and motility exhibited parallel increases. At 60 days, the values for these 3 parameters and the proportions of normal and abnormal spermatozoa became stable. During puberty, various forms of disruption of the midpiece as well as the presence of extremely atypical detached flagella resulted in a special pattern of sperm morphology, although all of these abnormal features disappeared at 40 days.

[Autopreservation of semen prior to sterilizing treatment].

Among 511 subjects candidate to autopreservation of semen prior to sterilizing treatment, satisfactory preservation was possible in 40% of patients with Hodgkin's disease and 15% of patients with carcinoma of the testis. This difference in percentage is related to differences in alterations of semen before any treatment. The semen of 9% of the patients was used for insemination; 95% wished that preservation be continued. Spontaneous recovery is possible, notably in carcinoma of the testis. Despite the risk of psychological problems, autopreservation should be recommended in cases with moderate initial alterations of the semen.

Transcortin: a corticosteroid-binding protein of plasma-XIV. Effects of time of equilibration of serum with cortisol on transcortin determinations by gel filtration.

The results of determination of plasma transcortin levels by gel filtration are subject to assay conditions such as duration of incubation and the amount of cortisol added. We investigated the cause for the dependency of results on assay conditions by incubating samples over prolonged periods of time. Transcortin concentration and the rate of dissociation of the cortisol-transcortin complex remained constant over many weeks of storage at 4 degree C, while irreversible binding to unidentified macromolecules increased continuously. Irreversible binding occurs faster at 37 degrees C than at 4 degrees C. In addition, with time, an ether-extractable, less polar metabolite of cortisol appears in the serum. The data suggest that a highly reactive metabolite of cortisol enters into covalent binding with macromolecules during prolonged incubations.

A preliminary report: nutritional levels and cognitive performance in chronic alcohol abusers.

The relationship between vitamin levels, alcohol intake and cognitive status was examined in a group of 19 chronic alcoholics who had just begun to withdraw from alcohol. The results indicate that during this stage of detoxification levels of folic acid are the best predictors of cognitive performance. Alcohol intake, as measured by either total life consumption or years of alcohol abuse, was only weakly associated with neuropsychological tests scores. It is suggested that the cognitive recovery that occurs during the first weeks of abstinence may be related to nutritional variables, whereas the longer-lasting neuropsychological impairments of alcohol abusers may be related to the direct neurotoxic effects of alcohol.

[Conclusions of the first-aid treatment of emergency patients from a prospective study of 106 lethal outcomes (author's transl)].

To obtain an objective judgement on the efficiency of emergency help, 106 emergency patients who died during a six month period were subjected to an examination in which all aspects of their treatment, beginning at the scene of the emergency and lasting until their death were documented. It could be shown that 8.5% of the examined patients would have had a chance for survival if proper and optimal treatment had been given, despite the effects of their injuries. Only by improving knowledge of first-aid procedures can an increase in the efficiency of emergency measures be attained as will be proven in this paper. Intensive schooling is necessary not only for the layman and ambulance orderlies but for doctors who are to be employed in rescue work in particular. The present criteria (one-year clinical activity and competency are by no means sufficient as a foundation.

Influence of sex hormones on gamma-glutamyltranspeptidase activity in rats serum with Morris hepatoma 5123 D.

The Stilbestrol treatment of the female rats with the Morris hepatoma 5123 D resulted in decrease of the gamma-glutamyl-transpeptidase (GGTP) activity in serum and in hepatoma, but only during the treatment. Given to the male rats under the same conditions, Stilbestrol had no influence on the GGTP activity. Castration of males was the cause of the GGTP activity decay in hepatoma and in serum, but it was not the case with females. Sustanon diminished the GGTP activity in serum of the female rats with hepatoma.

[External heart compression with the heel (author's transl)].

External heart compression during cardiopulmonary resuscitation is an usual method. As an alternative to the arm-hand method the leg-heel method is proposed. Both methods were tested with a group of laymen and paramedical personnel at the Recording Resusci-Anne manequin. Criteria of evaluation were frequency, point, intensity and direction of heart pressure. 64 per cent of all test persons found the method of heel-compression to be of no value of the basis of personal experience. They showed early fatigue and complained of leg pain. The incidence of failure for both methods was comparable. Frequency and intensity of pressure showed no differences. The most important disadvantage appeared to be the lack of discharge of the sternum at the end of the phase of compression. Experience has shown that difficulties may arise from teaching several methods. Therefore the teaching of laymen should be restricted to one method only, usable universally. The restrictions of the leg-heel method are listed.

Evaluation Studies as Topic↗

[Etiological study of low fertility in eastern Gaboon. I. Scheme and first findings (author's transl)].

The etiological study conducted in 1975 in Haut-Ogooué and Ogooué-Lolo included 1,548 patients male and female. In the 21 investigated areas the patients were asked questions and examined by a medical team which took swabs so that bacterial, parastic, immunological and genetical assays could be carried out. The object of this article is to review the feasibility of such a local inquiry and state the first findings. Abnormalities of the epididymis are more commonly verified in non-fertile men. Microfilaremia is related to the presence of hydroceles and epididymis lesions. It shows more often in men with less than 3 children. The authors do not refer to any of physiopathology to explain these findings which need to be ascertained in further inquiries.
