The mutagenic activity of hydroxyurea in Chlamydomonas reinhardi.

Hydroxyurea, an inhibitor of ribonucleotide reductase, increases the frequency of streptomycin resistant mutants in liquid cultures of Chlamydomonas reinhardi after 45 h incubation. After more prolonged incubation in hydroxyurea medium the frequency of streptomycin resistant mutants declines. This may be due to the slower growth rate of streptomycin resistant mutants compared to wild type cells in hydroxyurea containing medium. Studies on solid medium show that both the rate of forward mutation to streptomycin resistance and reverse mutation to nicotinamide independence are increased several fold by growth on hydroxyurea.

Verbalizable knowledge of certain speech articulations.

Normal Ss' verbalizable knowledge of articulator positions for selected speech sounds was probed by using a battery of yes/no questions. Answers showed that 91 college students had substantial knowledge of those articulations which are either visible and/or productive of strong tactile sensation that can be used during the sub-vocal articulation Ss performed before answering the questions.

Effect of varying differentiator frequency response on recorded peak dP/dt.

The effects of varying the differentiator cutoff frequency on the recorded peak first derivative of left ventricular pressure were assessed. High fidelity, solid state pressure transducers and recording equipment were used. In the canine heart with a basic periodicity of 1-3 Hz, the differentiator frequency response required to record an accurate peak dP/dt is influenced by the value of peak dP/dt. In the range of peak dP/dt between 1 500 and 9 000 mm Hg/s (200 and 1 200 kPa/s), a differentiator cutoff frequency of at least 90 Hz was required to record accurately peak dP/dt.

Fats and oils. Determination of fat in body tissues and in food mixtures.

The official final action acid hydrolysis method, 14.019, for the determination of fat in foods was successfully applied, with slight modifications, to the analysis of homogenates of food, feces, and animal tissues as well as dry samples of mixed foods. In samples containing sucrose or fructose, it was necessary to carry out a fermentation procedure before acid hydrolysis to avoid problems encountered when these sugars were present.

Therapeutic abortion by intra-amniotic injection of prostaglandins.

Intra-amniotic injection of either prostaglandin F(2)alpha or prostaglandin E(2) was used in an attempt to induce therapeutic abortion in mid-pregnancy in 27 patients. Termination of pregnancy was successful in 11 out of 13 cases when prostaglandin E(2) alone was used, but in only 6 out of 14 cases when prostaglandin F(2)alpha was used. A further eight patients aborted after additional intravenous oxytocin stimulation, but the combined procedures failed altogether in two patients who were initially given prostaglandin F(2)alpha. The technique was simple, free from serious side effects, and reasonably effective when prostaglandin E(2) was used.
