Biochemical differentiation in bile duct cestodes and their marsupial hosts.

Isozyme electrophoresis was used to assess possible cospeciation of parasites (cestodes of the Progamotaenia festiva complex) and their hosts (Australian diprotodont marsupials) and to compare the extent of interspecific genetic diversity of the parasites and their hosts. On the basis of morphology, there are three species in the complex, although electrophoresis revealed 14 distinct genetic types, most of which were host specific, although there were three cases of apparent host switching. The evolutionary relationships among the parasites were only partially concordant with those among the hosts. Moreover, the extent of electrophoretic diversity among the parasites was much higher than that among hosts.

Unexpectedly high incidence of cytomegalovirus infection in apparent peptic ulcers in renal transplant recipients.

Gastroduodenal ulcers in renal transplant recipients are usually accepted as being acid-peptic in origin. In a series of 573 renal transplant recipients there was histologic material available for examination from eight patients with gastroduodenal ulcers and three patients with gastric erosions. All ulcers had originally been diagnosed as peptic or stress ulcers. However, on review, five of them proved to contain cytomegalovirus (CMV); CMV was also present in all the stomachs with erosions. We suggest that CMV infection plays as important a role in upper gastroduodenal ulcers and erosions in renal transplant recipients as it does in similar lesions elsewhere in the gastrointestinal tract of these immunosuppressed patients.

Enzyme markers in inbred rat strains: genetics of new markers and strain profiles.

Twenty-six inbred strains of the laboratory rat (Rattus norvegicus) were examined for electrophoretic variation at an estimated 97 genetic loci. In addition to previously documented markers, variation was observed for the enzymes aconitase, aldehyde dehydrogenase, and alkaline phosphatase. The genetic basis of these markers (Acon-1, Ahd-2, and Akp-1) was confirmed. Linkage analysis between 35 pairwise comparisons revealed that the markers Fh-1 and Pep-3 are linked. The strain profiles of the 25 inbred strains at 11 electrophoretic markers are given.

Serum haptoglobin and alpha 1-acid glycoprotein as indicators of the effectiveness of cis-diamminedichloroplatinum (CDDP) in ovarian cancer patients--a preliminary report.

Twenty-one patients with adenocarcinoma of the ovary were given a maximum of five courses of CDDP by i.v. infusion every 4 weeks. With one exception, the serum levels of both haptoglobin and alpha 1-acid glycoprotein correlate with tumour burden before therapy and at follow-up. It is suggested that a more accurate assessment of the effectiveness of CDDP therapy may be obtained by estimating these serum proteins before each infusion than by an abdominal examination.

Factors and their influence on regional cerebral blood flow during nonpulsatile cardiopulmonary bypass.

In this study we examined the relationship of regional cerebral blood flow (CBF) to mean arterial pressure, systemic blood flow, partial pressure of arterial carbon dioxide (PaCO2), nasopharyngeal temperature, and hemoglobin during hypothermic nonpulsatile cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB). Regional CBF was determined by clearance of xenon 133 in 67 patients undergoing coronary bypass grafting procedures. There was a significant decrease in regional CBF (55% decrease) during CPB, with nasopharyngeal temperature and PaCO2 being the only two significant factors (p less than 0.05). In a subgroup of 10 patients, variation of pump flow between 1.0 and 2.0 L/min/m2 did not significantly affect regional CBF. We conclude that cerebral autoregulation is retained during hypothermic CPB. Under the usual conditions of CPB, variations in flow and pressure are not associated with important physiological or detrimental clinical affects.

Changes in serum acute phase proteins in ovarian cancer patients receiving cis-diamminedichloroplatinum (CDDP) infusion therapy.

Nine patients with adenocarcinoma of the ovary were given a number of courses of Cisplatin, by I.V. infusion. In four patients a complete clinical response was observed and these patients are disease-free one year after treatment. There was no clinical response in the remaining five patients who have subsequently died. Serial determinations of three acute-phase reactant proteins (alpha 1-acid glycoprotein, haptoglobin, alpha 1-antitrypsin) were performed before every infusion and after therapy. Constantly high or rising serum levels of haptoglobin and alpha 1-acid glycoprotein were associated with progression of the cancer, whereas in patients who were disease-free after therapy, these glycoproteins remained essentially in the normal range. The results suggest that serial measurements of haptoglobin and alpha 1-acid glycoprotein may have clinical value as aids in deciding the effectiveness of drug therapy in these patients.
