Onchocerciasis: a prevalence study in Bebeka, Ethiopia.

A prevalence study was made in Bebeka, the largest coffee plantation enterprise in Ethiopia. The enterprise had a house-to-house censused population of 7,122 persons from whom 1,611 were examined for onchocerciasis using either taking of skin-snips or the Mazzotti test or both. The overall prevalence was 30.9%. It was analyzed according to sex, age, and origin of the sampled population with regard to previous residence in areas endemic for onchocerciasis or not. The prevalence differed significantly between different age groups, i.e. it increases with age. Among male persons the prevalence was higher than among the female population. A higher incidence was observed among persons originally coming from endemic areas.

Local and systemic antibody responses in gerbils following vaccination with irradiated or non-irradiated Trichostrongylus colubriformis larvae.

Groups of 10 Mongolian gerbils, Meriones unguiculatus, were vaccinated with 1,500 gamma-irradiated Trichostrongylus colubriformis infective larvae (L3) or with non-irradiated larvae. 25 days later five gerbils from each group were necropsied and the remaining gerbils challenged with 1,500 non-irradiated T. colubriformis infective larvae. Systemic, local intestinal and coproantibody levels were compared in each group of gerbils 25 days after vaccination and 26 days after challenge. Strong local intestinal and faecal antibody responses were detected. Coproantibodies reflected antibody levels in the intestinal contents and in mucosal extracts. The results gave further support to the view that coproantibody measurements provide a sensitive index of immunity at mucosal surfaces to intestinal parasites.

Low HTLV-1 seroprevalence in endemic tropical spastic paraparesis in Ethiopia.

Tropical spastic paraparesis (TSP), a chronic progressive myelopathy, occurs in Ethiopia in epidemic form as neurolathyrism, while the endemic form has remained obscure. We describe the clinical features of 22 patients with TSP and the results of screening for HTLV-1 in these patients, 26 patients with other neurological disorders, 14 patients with leukaemia and 66 blood donors. The major manifestations in the patients with TSP were weakness and spasticity of the lower limbs with upper motor neurone signs and minimal sensory loss and bladder dysfunction. Two patients with TSP (9%), 2 patients with other neurological disorders (7.7%) and one patient with leukaemia and deafness were seropositive for HTLV-1. All the 66 blood donors were seronegative. Our results suggest that HTLV-1 may not play a major role in the pathogenesis of TSP in Ethiopia.
